JEWELL — The Roland-Story baseball team had a tough time putting runs on the board in both games of a doubleheader at South Hamilton Friday.
The Norsemen combined for just seven hits over the two games, coming up short each time. They suffered a 6-0 loss in the first game and a 2-1 setback in the second to fall to 10-6 on the season and 3-4 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
Roland-Story totaled four hits in the opener. Ajay Twedt, Nolan Faber, Zach Twedt and Jon Sansgaard each singled once.
Aaron Seydell was the losing pitcher, allowing five earned runs on 14 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 5 ⅓ innings. Alex Berends struck out and walked one batter apiece in one hitless inning of relief.
Zeke Balderas earned the win for South Hamilton in game one after striking out seven and going without a walk in six innings of work. Brock Galetich was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Cade Flaugh went 2-for-4 with a double and a run and Ethan Young tripled, scored and drove in a run for the Hawks.
In the nightcap, Roland-Story put up one run in the opening inning, but was kept off the board the rest of the way by South Hamilton’s Tycin Barkema, Balderas and Cole Berg.
Zach Magnuson and Ajay Twedt kept Roland-Story in the game, limiting the Hawks to two runs in the third inning. Magnuson took the loss after allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 ⅓ innings and Twedt gave up two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 2 ⅔ scoreless innings of work.
Jayden Macdonald singled and drove in Roland-Story’s only run in the second game. Ajay Twedt singled and scored and Zach Twedt also came up with a base hit.
Barkema went three innings and surrendered one run on one hit and walk apiece with two strikeouts to get the victory. Zeke Balderas was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer, accounting for South Hamilton’s only runs.

NEVADA — Roland-Story earned its second doubleheader sweep in as many days June 12 by going on the road and taking out Nevada by scores of 8-0 and 5-2.
Roland-Story received dominant pitching in both games. The Norsemen took advantage of seven Nevada errors in the first game and they hit the ball well in the nightcap, finishing with nine hits.
In the opener, Steven Berends fired a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks. Nick Stole was 2-for-5 with a double, run and two RBIs; Nolan Faber singled and scored twice and Aaron Seydell tripled, scored and drove in a run.
Ajay Twedt singled and scored and Jayden Macdonald was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Dylan Sporrer was the losing Nevada pitcher after giving up six runs — just one earned — on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Thomas Crawford went 2-for-2, and Keaton Fry and James Carsrud both singled once for the Cubs.
In the nightcap, Zach Twedt held Nevada to one hit and struck out nine with two walks over 6 ⅔ innings to get the victory. Aaron Seydell allowed one hit and picked up a strikeout in the other ⅓ of an inning for the Norsemen.
Nevada’s only runs came in the bottom of the seventh after Roland-Story had built a 5-0 lead. Roland-Story took firm command with four runs in the top of the sixth.
Ajay Twedt, Stole and Faber each collected two hits in the second game. Ajay also scored one run, Stole scored twice and picked up an RBI and Faber walked once.
Macdonald singled and drove home two runs, Zach Twedt was 1-for-4 with a run and Zach Magnuson chipped in one base hit.
Jordan Barrett was the losing pitcher for Nevada in game two after allowing three runs — just one earned — on six hits with 11 strikeouts and four walks in 5 ⅔ innings.
Cael Franzen recorded both Nevada hits and he also drove in a run. Ty Dittmer and Gavin Melohn each scored once for the Cubs.
Roland-Story improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference with the sweep. Nevada fell to 2-9 and 1-7 respectively.

DES MOINES — Roland-Story made the most of its opportunities in a doubleheader sweep of Lenox June 11 at Grand View University.
The Norsemen swept the Tigers by scores of 12-2 and 9-4. They had more runs than hits in each game, putting up 11 hits in the opener and five in the nightcap to improve to 8-4 on the season.
In game one, Roland-Story took a 6-2 lead after three innings, then scored four times in the fourth and twice in the fifth to end the game after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Jayden Macdonald was 3-for-4 with three runs and RBIs apiece and Nick Stole doubled twice, scored three runs and picked up an RBI to lead Roland-Story’s hitting attack in the opener. Zach Twedt and Steven Berends were both 2-for-3 with a combined three RBIs, Ajay Twedt singled and scored twice and Jon Sansgaard was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Nolan Faber went the distance on the mound to get the win. He struck out seven and gave up five hits with no walks.
Zach Schmitz gave up nine runs — four earned — on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings as the losing Lenox pitcher in game one. Colton Gordon was 2-for-3 with two steals and a run for the Tigers.
The nightcap saw Roland-Story break a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth. The Norsemen added five more runs in the sixth to coast home to victory.
Macdonald was the winning pitcher in the second game, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 6 ⅓ innings. Ajay Twedt struck out one and gave up one hit in the final ⅔ of an inning.
Zach Twedt was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in the nightcap. Macdonald singled and drove in two runs; Faber singled, walked two times and scored twice; Aaron Seydell walked twice and scored three times and Ajay Twedt singled and scored.
Gordon doubled, scored and drove in a run and Cullen Wood doubled and scored for Lenox in the second game. Gordon was the losing pitcher, giving up all nine runs — five earned — on five hits with eight walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
