The RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program is currently recruiting volunteers for its Pen Pal Projects. Pen Pals is a project linking middle school age students with volunteers through letter writing. We are hoping you will share your volunteer spirit and help make a difference in a child’s life.
The program allows students to practice the art of letter writing, increase literacy skills, builds positive multi-generational relationships and increase school-related activity learning that is beneficial to both students and volunteers. We’ve had tremendous success and excitement with pen pals these past three years. Last year we had 91 student pen pal matches.
Utilizing profile sheets, we will work with the teachers to pair up students with volunteers. Volunteers will learn about the structure of the pen pal project and will receive a schedule during an orientation.
Volunteers will only need to be available in person for a project orientation with RSVP and to attend a pen pal party which lasts about one hour towards the end of the school year, at which time student and volunteer pen pals meet in person.
Orientations are set for mid-September. Volunteers unable to attend an orientation will be met with one on one. We are currently recruiting 75 - 80 volunteers who we hope to have all in place by the end of September.
Volunteers can be a pen pal to a student in either Boone or Ogden, one does not have to live in the same community and can live anywhere within the county. The pen pal project is also ideal for “snowbirds”. Students would love to get a letter about their pen pals travels or winter destination.
