WEBSTER CITY — The Roland-Story girls placed in the top five and the Norse boys placed eighth at the Lynx Invitational Sept. 4 at the Webster City Links Golf Course.

The Roland-Story girls produced two top-10 runners, placing fifth out of 11 scored teams with 112 points.

Kylie Tjernagel kept up her hot start to the season by placing second individually. Tjernagel crossed the finish line of the girls’ race with a 5-kilometer time of 21:20 to come in behind only Bryce Gidel of Humboldt.

Gidel is ranked 18th in 3A. She ran a time of 20:28.

“I knew who the first girl (Gidel) was and I saw her the whole time,” Tjernagel said. “That was really encouraging.”

Tjernagel didn’t quite meet her goal time-wise, but she’ll still take her performance.

“I was hoping to get under 21(minutes) today,” Tjernagel said. “Next time.”

Kaitlyn Kilstofte also placed in the top 10 for the Roland-Story girls. Kilstofte completed the course in 22:42 to place eighth.

“I felt pretty good this meet,” Kilstofte said. “Having Kylie to run with at the start is good — she gets me out fast. (Then) I just find my pace. Today my goal was to get top 10 and beat my time from Ames, which was (around) a 23:05. Today was high 22s, so that was good.”

Bekah Strobl was the third Norsemen to cross the finish line. She took 30th in 24:50. Caden Thoreson came in 39th at 26:26, Jordyn Ramus 53rd in 28:20 and Dana Vincent 71st in 32:37.

Roland-Story placed eighth in the boys’ race with 164 points. Dylan Ihle placed in the top 20 for the Norsemen with a time of 18:50.

“It went alright,” Ihle said. “I started out a little fast trying to keep up with the top 10 guys. Just the last mile I let three or four guys pass me. But I’m still pretty happy with that. It’s only the second meet of the season, so you can only expect times to get better.”

Seth Halleland and Levi Webb each added a top-30 place for the Norse boys. Halleland clocked in at 19:33 to end up 27th and Webb ran a 19:41 to take 29th.

Zane Haglund finished 40th in 20:05 and Nathan Limas 50th in 20:15 to complete the scoring for the Roland-Story boys.

Jay Sanderson and Jarod Hart also ran varsity. Sanderson took 57th in 20:48 and Hart 74th in 21:39.

Humboldt’s Quinton Orr, the No. 1 runner in Class A, was the boys’ individual champion with a time of 16:30.

Humboldt won the team championship in both races.

The Wildcat boys, ranked 10th in 3A, scored 45 points to easily beat Webster City’s score of 82 for first. The Humboldt girls finished with a score of 63 to top Algona by nine points for first.
