GILBERT — A late surge by Gilbert in the second quarter doomed the Roland-Story football team in a 35-12 loss to the Tigers Friday at Gilbert.

The Norsemen only trailed 7-6 going into the final six minutes of the first half. But Gilbert’s Tucker Hanson came up with two touchdowns, the first on a 60-yard run and the second on a 6-yard scamper, in the final 5:44 to break the game open.

“Very frustrating game for us,” Roland-Story head coach Aaron Stensland said. “We would have felt a whole lot better at half with that score than we did giving up the two quick scores before half.”

Gilbert’s Ethan Vesey added two touchdown runs in the third quarter. Roland-Story didn’t get on the board again until Zach Twedt found the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

“We had a lot of self-inflicted setbacks Friday night — two fumbles and a blocked punt — things that great team can’t do,” Stensland said. “I think we wore down a little bit in the second half, but in the fourth quarter I think we got our footing back. We faced them head on, moved the ball again and got some nice stops. The kids never quit. It was still important to them late in the game, even being down.”

Roland-Story ran for 201 yards, led by Twedt’s 103 yards and two touchdowns. But the Norsemen couldn’t get anything going through the air, finishing with zero passing yards.

Kyle Selby added 57 yards rushing and Wyatt Bunn 41 for the Norsemen.

Gilbert finished with 376 total yards. Vesey ran for 115 yards, Hanson had 74 yards rushing and 37 receiving and Tanner Henningsen threw for 76 yards and ran for 47 to help the Tigers improve to 1-1.

Roland-Story will take a 1-1 record into this Friday’s game against Prairie City-Monroe (1-1).

“We need to get a lot better over the next few weeks,” Stensland said. “Our schedule is brutal and no one is going to feel sorry for us. We’ve got to dust ourselves off, go back to work and get back into the fight. We have many games left we can win, but it’s going to take a total team effort and belief!”

Roland-Story’s game with PCM takes place at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Story City.
