STORY CITY — The Roland-Story football team couldn’t overcome timely big plays from Prairie City-Monroe Friday in a 19-6 loss to the Mustangs.

The Norsemen defense was stout for most of the night. But the Mustangs came up big right before the end of the half and again in the third quarter and that made the difference.

Roland-Story led 6-0 on a 1-yard Wyatt Bunn touchdown run in the first quarter that was set up by an 81-yard pass from Bunn to Adam McIlrath. The lead held until PCM’s final drive of the first half.

The Mustangs had the ball inside the Roland-Story 30 with time running out. PCM quarterback August Stock chucked a deep pass down the right side on the final play of the half and Mustang receiver Jacob VanWinkle went up and got it as time expired to tie the game.

In the third quarter PCM drove down to the Roland-Story 35 on its second drive of the quarter. The Mustangs were facing a fourth-and-2 and decided to go for it.

After a timeout PCM went with a reverse to VanWinkle. It caught the Norse off guard as VanWinkle raced 35 yards to paydirt, giving his team a 12-6 advantage.

“We just need to watch our keys,” Roland-Story linebacker Kyle Selby said. “The tackles and guards will lead us right to them. We can’t be keeping our eyes in the backfield. That’s what gets us caught.”

Roland-Story had to punt on its next possession. But the Norsemen defense made a stand to get the ball back inside its own 25.

On its second play after getting the ball Roland-Story caught another bad break. The Norsemen fumbled to give the ball back to PCM on the Roland-Story 19.

Three plays later Sage Burns ran it in from five yards out. That was the final nail in the coffin as Roland-Story dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Bunn said his team can’t dwell on the loss. He said they need to learn from it and respond to the adversity.

“Coach (Aaron Stensland) talked last week that we’re either going to break or we’re going to build,” Bunn said. “We need to realize one play isn’t the end of the game.”

The Norse quarterback said its up to the seniors to make sure the team turns the corner.

“In my opinion, we have some of the best coaches in the state of Iowa,” Bunn said. “It’s up to me and Kyle as leaders to get that spark and energy for the team. Last year we graduated so many seniors. We have to find guys that want to step up and lead. I think it’s up to us to find out what we need to do.”

There are also positives to build off of for the Norsemen.

Defense was a bright spot for Roland-Story against PCM. The Norsemen held the Mustangs to 283 yards and forced one turnover.

“We have a really solid defense,” Selby said. “We’re deeply balanced. We can pretty much run anything.”

Jimmy Philipsen recovered the fumble for Roland-Story.

Roland-Story needs to find more consistency on offense. The Norsemen were held to 237 yards and they had two turnovers.

Bunn completed 11 of 20 passes for 157 yards and he also ran for 39 yards. McIlrath made two catches for 105 yards, Twedt had seven grabs for 41 and 13 yards rushing and Selby added 28 yards rushing and 12 receiving.

PCM improved to 2-1. VanWinkle had 42 yards receiving and 35 rushing, Burns and Colby Tool each ran for 38, Aiden Anderson made two catches for 54 and Stock completed 8 of 12 passes for 123.

Roland-Story will be back at home this Friday. The Norsemen host Iowa Falls-Alden (2-1) for homecoming and the game is set to start at 7 p.m. in Story City.
