The Iowa State Patrol on Monday released the name of the person killed during a chase on Interstate 35 north of Ames over the weekend.
Whaitarkwoia Tomahn, 41, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., was the driver of a 1997 Toyota Avalon, when a state trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop on I-35 southbound near exit 121 just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Tomahn failed to pull over and a chase began. The chase ended when Tomahn tried to exit the highway at exit 121 near the Prairie Area rest area and crashed into a 2016 Volvo semitrailer, which was parked.
Tomahn was taken by Life Flight to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines and pronounced dead. Tomahn was not wearing a seatbelt, the patrol stated in the accident report.
The driver of the semi, Dzhalal Akhmedov, 31, of West Vallay, Utah,, wasn’t injured.
