Trick or Treat


• Story City GCC will hold its Downtown Trick or Treat night on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.


• The city of Story City will hold trick-or-treat night on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m.


• The city of Roland will hold Beggar’s Night on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.


• Bethany Life, 212 Lafayette Ave., will celebrate Halloween at the Households on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 7 p.m.


Fall Play


Roland-Story High School presents “Romeo and Winifred,” with performance dates on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available at the high school office or before show.


Fall Festival


Bergen Lutheran Church, 101 W. Maple St. in Roland, is hosting its Fall Festival on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 to 11 a.m. Presented by WELCA, the event will include a Harvest Brunch with a menu of egg wraps, biscuits and gravy, yogurt parfaits, mini monkey bread, and turkey sliders. The cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children. There will also be a bake sale, craft sale and a “gently used” room.


PEO Tasting Bee


Story City’s P.E.O. Chapter PB is hosting a “tasting event” featuring fall foods such as soups, desserts, appetizers and main dishes on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For $10, you can sample a wide variety of foods and leave with recipes of your favorite tastes. All proceeds will be directed to P.E.O. projects providing educational opportunities for women, including loans, grants, scholarships and awards. Join us at the Story City Senior Citizens Center, 503 Elm St. Tickets can be purchased through a PEO Chapter PB member or at the door.


EllieMae at Simly Mae’s


Simply Mae’s boutique, 618 Broad St. in Story City, will hold its holiday open house on Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EllieMae, a contestant from “The Voice,” will perform from 10 a.m. to noon. Hot cider and snacks will be served.


Retail Holiday Open Houses


Several Story City stores are celebrating holiday open houses during their business hours on Friday and Saturday: Antiques Iowa, Affordables, It’s Sew Tempting, Jacobson Gun Center, NuCara Pharmacy, Penn Station Antiques, Simply Mae’s, Story City Floral, The Tin Chandelier, True Value and Wheeler Auto Supply.


Story Festival


Story City will be celebrating its 13th Story Festival Nov. 7-9. Storyteller Will Stuck will be featured throughout the weekend, in addition to KCCI-TV anchor Eric Hanson, who will be speaking on Saturday evening, and Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne, skyping in from her home in Jacksonville, Fla. Coordinated by the Bertha Bartlett Public Library Foundation, the three-day event will feature three workshops, a Friday night Storytelling Showcase, a Book Fair, Story Stops in downtown Story City, two afternoon Storytelling venues of local stories and a dinner on Saturday night at the Story City Community Center with final performances and a meal catered by Guys with Grills.


Tickets for the workshops are $15 and the Saturday night dinner is $40 per person available from the Bertha Bartlett Public Library. All checks are to be written to the BBPL Foundation, and mailed to 503 Broad St., Story City, IA 50248. Many events are free to attend with a free will donation. Tickets for the dinner must be purchased by Oct. 31. All proceeds from the events will be supporting the expansion of the Bertha Bartlett Public Library, a project which will commence in 2020.


Thanksgiving Food Drive


First State Bank and Town & Country Insurance are holding a food drive during the month of November to benefit those in need this holiday season. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off locally at 609 Broad St. in Story City.


Bertha Bartlett Public Library


The following events will be held at the Bertha Bartlett Public Library, 503 Broad St. in Story City.


Knit Pickers — Fridays at 10 a.m. — An open group for knitters and stitchers of all ages.


Preschool Storytime — Fridays at 10:30 a.m. for kids ages 0 to 6 years. — Enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays and crafts. Parents, grandparents and caregivers are welcome.


Book sale


The Bertha Bartlett Public Library Foundation is having a BYOB Book Sale now through the end of November. The sale room area is currently full of DVDs, books on audio cassettes, VHS movies and books of every genre. The sale is $5 for all the items one can fit in a box. Proceeds from the sale support the projects and programs of the Bertha Bartlett Public Library in Story City.


G.I. Jill’s


Halloween Party — Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at G.I. Jill’s. The best costume will get a $50 gift certificate!


Play Bargo on Nov. 4 starting at 6:30 p.m. at G.I. Jill’s, 207 N. Main St. in Roland.


Play cards


At 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.


Fellowship luncheon


On Wednesday, Nov. 6, a Fellowship luncheon will be at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. The event offers great food, fellowship and bingo. Reservations can be made by calling 515-290-9774.


Story Theater


The animated hit “Abominable” will be shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1, 2, 3, at the Story Theater in Story City. Tra-la-laaaaa! Join us at the Roland Library to celebrate all things Dav Pilkey on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m.! Pilkey is the author of several very popular book series including Dog Man, Captain Underpants and more! There will be crafts, activities and treats all related to Pilkey’s famous characters. ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’


The Ames Community Theater (ACTORS) production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” opens Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at 120 Abraham Drive. There are several people from Judge Story Theatrical Troupe who are involved with the production.
