A Story City woman has been charged with second-degree theft after taking a vehicle without consent and failing to return it, court documents show.

Lisa R. Fowler, 45, was arrested on Jan. 9 in Bella Vista, Arkansas, a city just south of the Missouri border, after Story City Police responded to a tip that she fled south, Story City Police Sgt. Jerry. Spencer said.

Fowler was transferred to Story County Jail in Nevada on Wednesday.

In December, Fowler and the owner of the vehicle agreed on letting her use the vehicle for a set amount of time.

A couple days had gone by and the owner contacted Fowler numerous times and gave her from Dec. 30 until Jan. 5 to return the vehicle before they reached out to the authorities, according to court documents.

After Jan. 5 had passed, the owner reached out to authorities, who began searching for Fowler.

Story City Police were able to locate her in Arkansas after receiving a tip and contacted local law enforcement for assistance.

Fowler was apprehended on Jan. 9 and found the vehicle in her possession, according to court documents.

The vehicle was left at a repossession center in Arkansas, but will be making its way back to Iowa.

If found guilty, Fowler could receive a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $7,500.

She is being held at Story County Jail on a $5,000 bond, according to online court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10 at the Story County Courthouse in Nevada.
