Arlen Robert (Bob) Ericson, age 88, of Story City, Iowa, passed on peacefully Jan. 15, 2020, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. Burial was in the Story City Cemetery.
Bob was born Feb. 20, 1931, the only child of Arnold and Ruth Ericson. He graduated from Randall High School in 1949 and Drake University after time in the Air Force. He married Eloise Hamilton on June 4, 1955, in Lucas. Bob taught school in Alexander, Bradgate and Bradgate-Gilmore City school districts before employment at the Iowa State Highway Commission-Iowa D.O.T. He retired in 1992 after 33 years.
His community service included being a Cub Master, Sunday School teacher, deacon and church usher. He was a member of Randall Lions Club and Randall Community Club as well. He also enjoyed being able to provide transportation for friends and family members when they needed medical services.
Bob had a love for nature. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. He took his family on camping trips to state parks which included hiking and teaching his children about plants, animals, reptiles and insects. Other interests were photography and reading. He was a Ham radio operator. One of the last people he was in contact with was from Quito, Ecuador. Bob taught Morse Code at night classes for Adult Education. He graduated from Drake with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, majors in English and Social Science and minors in Science and Drivers Education. He loved to learn and was a great teacher, especially to his children.
Bob continued to stay connected with friends from his childhood, people he met when he began teaching and co-workers from the D.O.T. others who touched his life were members of his medical care team who he loved sharing hugs with. He valued all these friendships. In recent years Bob and Eloise met Ron and Gus Jacobson regularly for breakfast at Subway and Lyn and Ernie Foshe for tacos at the American Legion. He looked forward to spending time with them.
Bob and Eloise enjoyed traveling on bus trips throughout the United States following her retirement. In 2005 they took a trip to Hawaii in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Bob enjoyed the simple pleasures in life such as feeding and watching birds and squirrels in his back yard, his home, the love he shared with his wife and spending time with all of his family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Eloise; children, Cathy Bickelhaupt (Kel), Warren and Paul (Candy); grandchildren, Danelle Williamson (Kelly), Justin and Austin Bickelhaupt and Connor Ericson; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Lauren and Joseph Williamson.
