Dorothy Jean Olthoff Appelgate, 88, went to be with the Lord April 27, 2013 with her family by her side. She was born November 21, 1924 north of Jewell, Iowa to Ole and Hannah (Cordes) Olthoff. A life long educator, Dorothy began her teaching career at age 17 in rural school near Kamrar. She attended Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Drake University in 1967. She taught elementary school for 25 years at Radcliffe Community School. After retiring, she continued to substitute teach in area schools for another ten years.

On November 27, 1946 she married Kenneth Appelgate and lived on a farm near Radcliffe, Iowa. They retired to a home on Little Wall Lake near Jewell in 1988. In 2006, they moved to Story City, IA. For the past six years Dorothy was a resident of Bethany Manor, Story City.

She was a member of Kamrar Presbyterian Church and Radcliffe United Methodist Church. She was involved in several community organizations and a life long member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her love of music was reflected in her numerous community choral groups, leading children’s choirs at church, singing in church choir, and piano. Dorothy enjoyed flower gardening, cake decorating, painting, sewing, and quilting. Their travels incorporated her love of history and fishing. Some of her most treasured moments were summers spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years; daughters Rosalyn "Lyn" Krause of Castle Rock, CO and Rebecca "Becky" (Tom) Muselman of Urbandale; sisters Janice (Gary) Nielsen of Omaha, NB, and JoAnn (Richard) Stone of Buffalo Grove, IL; grandsons Trent (Christy) Krause of Castle Rock, CO, Jeff (Claire) Muselman of West Des Moines, and Jason Muselman of Des Moines; granddaughter Robyn (Bruce) Pratt of Flower Mound, TX; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Raymond Olthoff and Robert Olthoff, and sister Norma Fonken.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 at Bethany Manor Chapel, Story City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, at Kamrar Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
