JEWELL — The Roland-Story girls’ track team took first in six events and second in three more, earning the team championship at the George Abell Hawkette Relays April 23 in Jewell.


Roland-Story won the distance medley, 4 X 100 and 4 X 200-meter relays, and also picked up gold in two distance running events and one field event. The Norse scored 136 points to outlast South Hamilton by 6.5 points for first among six teams.


In the distance medley, Taryn Johnston, Kylie Tjernagel, Juliann Clark and Reece Johnson turned in a time of four minutes, 34.85 seconds. The Norse team beat South Hamilton by over 11 seconds for first. Johnston, Tjernagel and Clark teamed with Maddie Morton to win both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 with respective times of :54.51 and 1:53.61. They beat Colo-NESCO’s :56.01 in the 4 X 100 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ 1:54.03 in the 4 X 200.


Johnson was victorious in the 1,500 and Kaitlyn Kilstofte the 3,000 for Roland-Story.


Johnson ran a 5:23.20 to top Collins-Maxwell’s Mikayla Houge by 23.10 for first in the 1,500. Kilstofte dominated the 3,000, outpacing Des Moines Christian’s Sophie Stineman by 1:17.64 for first.


Madison Geise earned gold in the discus for Roland-Story with a throw of 97 feet, nine inches and teammates Madison Martindale and Dana Vinson were third and fourth with respective tosses of 94-1 and 90-1. South Hamilton’s Lily Skartvedt won the silver with a throw of 96-7.


Vincent was second and teammate Macy Friest fourth in the shot put. Vincent threw 33-7 and Friest 29-6.


Skartvedt won the shot with toss of 34-2.5.


Rachel Patton came in second in the high jump with a strong jump of 5-2. Colo-NESCO’s Lauryn Hill was the victor with an impressive jump of 5-6.


In the long jump, Roland-Story’s Ava Charlson just missed out on a gold medal with a jump of 14-3.75. Collins-Maxwell’s Gracie Cheville jumped 14-4 to get the win.


Tjernagel came in third in the 200 with a time of :28.16. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Courtney Harle won in :27.77 and South Hamilton’s Kelbe Krumm was second in :28.03.


Charlson placed third in the 100 hurdles with a :17.79 showing. South Hamilton’s Hailey Cavan and Rylee Woodall were first and second with respective times of :16.36 and :17.03.


Bekah Strobl placed fourth in the 1,500 with a 6:08.20 showing, Megan Greenfield was fourth in the open 400 after running a 1:13.31 and Anne Wilgenbusch was fifth in the 100 after clocking in at :13.85. Morgan Blythe placed fifth in the 800 after running a 2:53.62 and Jadyn Nelson was fifth in the high jump with a jump of 4-6.


Patton came in sixth in both the 100 and 100 hurdles with respective :13.87 and :18.60 showings.


Roland-Story’s 4 X 800 team of Strobl, Blythe, Angela Harestad and Baylie Janssen won bronze in 12:05.62. South Hamilton won in 11:22.73 and Collins-Maxwell took second in 11:54.29.


The Norse sprint medley team of Wilgenbusch, Reagan Vogelaar, Anna Peach and Dani Grady placed fourth in 2:13.60. Their 4 X 400 quartet of Reagan Schmitz, Greenfield, Maddy Arthur and Blythe also took fourth in 4:50.79.

DES MOINES — Roland-Story won one relay and placed second in two field events at the Saydel Classic girls’ track meet April 22 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.


The Norse earned a gold medal in the 4 X 800-meter relay. Dana Vinson and Rachel Patton won silver in the shot put and high jump respectively.


Juliann Clark, Maddie Morton, Reece Johnson and Kylie Tjernagel formed Roland-Story’s winning 4 X 800 team. The completed the race in 10 minutes, 35.88 seconds to beat North Polk by 6.08 seconds for the gold.


Vinson’s best throw in the shot put was 35 feet, 0.5 inches. She came in behind the 36-8 by Bondurant-Farrar’s Katelyn Lappe and beat Kuemper Catholic’s Kenzie Schon by 2.25 inches for the silver.


Patton peaked with a jump of 5-0. Gilbert’s Haleigh Hadley also jumped 5-0, but did it in fewer attempts to take first in the friendly rivalry.


Ava Charlson took fifth in the 400 hurdles and sixth in the long jump for Roland-Story. Charlson ran a 1:16.40 in the 400 hurdles and her best jump in the long jump was 14-2.5.


Kaitlyn Kilstofte and Reece Johnson both scored for Roland-Story in distance running events.


Kilstofte placed fifth in the 3,000 after finishing the race in 12:16.22. Johnson came in sixth in the 1,500 with a 5:26.76 showing.
