STORY CITY — For the second week in a row the Roland-Story football team was unable to sustain a great start in a 25-7 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg Friday.

The Norsemen scored their only touchdown less than two minutes into the game to take an early 7-0 lead. But they were held scoreless the rest of the way and Vinton-Shellsburg used the big-play abilities of Jose Wilson and Maximo Vasquez to take charge.

With the 1980 and 1981 Class 2A state championship Roland-Story football teams being recognized at the game, the Norsemen opened the game running out of a double-tight wishbone to honor legendary Hall of Fame coach Kerry Van Winkle.

“It has been an honor to take over the program for Kerry and making sure he is still proud of the program and what were are doing is very important to all of us,” Roland-Story head coach Aaron Stensland said. “He impacted thousands of lives as a teacher and a coach and for me a role model and mentor to look up to and strive to be like. Not only does he have hundreds of wins and championships, but he has earned so much respect statewide for the person he was and continues to be, I’m glad I can call him a friend.”

The move paid off as Zach Twedt found the end zone on a 15-yard run to give Roland-Story its early advantage.

“This was another game where we came out with good energy and effort and opened the game with a great drive,” Stensland said.

Roland-Story also played well defensively in the first half.

Vasquez caught a 47-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for Vinton-Shellsburg, but the Vikings missed on their extra-point attempt. The Norse defense stood tall the rest of the half to maintain a 7-6 lead going into the locker room.

But in the third quarter Wilson burst through the Roland-Story defense for touchdown runs of 55 and 26 yards to give Vinton-Shellsburg a 19-7 lead. Erickson added a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and that iced the game as Roland-Story had no answers offensively in the second half.

The loss put Roland-Story at 1-7 overall and 0-4 in Class 2A District 7. But the Norse did take some steps forward after finishing with 207 yards rushing on offense and forcing three turnovers on defense.

“We rushed for over 200 yards Friday which we hadn’t done in a few games so that was also a bright spot,” Stensland said. “ I thought freshman Luke Patton had a better game this week he is looking more comfortable back there and the offensive line protected better.”

Kyle Selby ran for 111 yards on 17 carries and Twedt finished with 85 yards on 10 attempts and added three catches for 36 yards. Patton threw for 72 yards and ran for 11, Adam McIlrath had one catch for 15 yards, Wyatt Bunn made two grabs for 14 and Caleb Markwardt finished with one catch for seven.

On defense Twedt turned in another big game with 13 tackles, including nine solo stops. McIlrath had eight tackles, Jackson Sterle four, Patrick Gonzales 3.5, including two behind the line, Bunn three plus an interception and Will Bunn two plus a fumble recovery.

Ty Thompson also had an interception for the Norsemen.

Vinton Shellsburg improved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the district. Wilson ran for 168 yards, Vasquez had 75 yards receiving and 17 rushing and Erickson threw for 179 yards and ran for 101.

Roland-Story will face Nevada (6-2, 3-1) in its final game of the season this week.

“Our seniors have done a great job leading all week and I expect I will see the same thing come Monday as we enter an important week,” Stensland said. “Four practices to learn and get better and a great opportunity for us to spend time together and grow.”

The game against Nevada takes place this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Cub Stadium in Nevada.
