NEVADA — For most of the night Roland-Story did what it wanted to do against Nevada in a Heart of Iowa Conference game Jan. 21.

But the Royals were hit by turnover problems late in a 51-47 loss to the Cubs.

Roland-Story led 28-22 at the half and by 10 points in the third quarter. Nevada pulled within one by the end of the third, but the Norsemen pushed their lead back to 47-40 on a basket from Adam McIlrath midway through the fourth quarter.

Nevada switched from a zone to man defense in the final four minutes. The Cubs shut out Roland-Story the rest of the way, coming up with several key steals and getting the go-ahead basket on a traditional three-point play from Henry Nelson with 22.7 seconds left.

The Cubs forced Roland-Story’s Dylan Ihle to shoot an off-balanced 3-pointer in the final seconds. Nevada’s Tyler Sansgaard got the ball and was fouled with two seconds left, making 1 of 2 free throws to sew up the game.

The loss was the third in four games for the Norsemen, who fell to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Roland-Story fell despite outrebounding Nevada, 45-20, and holding the Cubs to 36-percent shooting from the field.

“It’s hard because it felt like we executed everything we wanted to do,” Roland-Story head coach Darrin Berggren said. “It felt like we gave it away that fourth quarter. We kept turning the ball over and didn’t get good looks at the hoop.”

Roland-Story turned the ball over 22 times. Nevada ended the game with just eight turnovers.

“We’ve just got to get better against pressure and being stronger with the ball,” Berggren said. “Twenty-eight minutes doesn’t win a game. Those last four it felt like we gave some things away that we didn’t do earlier.”

McIlrath posted a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds and he added two blocks and assists apiece for Roland-Story in the loss. Ihle hit five 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points and he added three rebounds.

Sam Skaar chipped in seven points and four assists, Nolan Faber five points and three assists, Nic Hansen two points, 10 rebounds and two assists and Wyatt Bunn two points for the Norse. Zach Twedt added three rebounds, Caleb Markwardt two assists and Dhruv Patel one assist.

Nevada improved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Sansgaard had 17 points and four steals, Nelson 13 points, three steals and two blocks and Kody Kruschwitz nine points and two steals for the Cubs.
