STORY CITY — The Roland-Story girls’ basketball team celebrated senior night by recording a decisive 85-19 victory Greene County Friday.


The Norse, ranked fifth in Class 3A, erupted for 32 points in the first quarter and led 56-13 at the half. By the end of the third quarter they were up 79-16, enabling them to coast the rest of the way and improve to 14-2 overall and 8-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Roland-Story made an impressive 64 percent of its field goals, including 16 of 30 3-pointers. The Norse tallied 21 assists and only five turnovers.


On defense Roland-Story limited Greene County to 22-percent shooting. The Norse forced 22 turnovers and held a 26-18 rebounding advantage.


Seniors Emily Berggren and Kylie Tjernagel made the most of their final regular season home game to lead the Norse rout.


Berggren went for a career-high 24 points, making 9 of 12 field goals and 5 of 7 3-pointers, and she also pulled down five rebounds. Tjernagel turned in a tremendous all-around game with 13 points, seven assists and five steals.


Madeline Morton added nine points, Reagan Barkema eight, Amy Rathmacher and Reece Johnson seven apiece and Jordyn Ramus and Dani Grady five apiece. Morton came up with one steal and assist apiece, Barkema and Johnson two assists each, Rathmacher three assists and two steals, Ramus one assist and Grady three assists and a block.


Ava Charlson contributed three points and Jadyn Nelson two points and rebounds apiece. Juliann Clark had one point, four rebounds and three steals, Madi Bauer one point and three rebounds and Madison Geise one assist.

STORY CITY — Roland-Story earned its biggest victory to date with a 59-54 triumph over North Polk in a battle of top-10 Class 3A teams Jan. 30.


The Norse, ranked fifth, handed the sixth-ranked and defending state runner-up Comets their first Heart of Iowa Conference loss. Roland-Story improved to 13-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference and North Polk fell to 10-5 and 9-1 respectively.


Roland-Story overcame a hot offensive start by North Polk. The Comets scored 22 points in the first quarter, but the Norse put up 17 of their own and by halftime they had cut the deficit to 36-33.


In the second half Roland-Story stepped it up on defense to hold North Polk to 18 points over the final two quarters. The Norse went up 46-44 after three quarters and added to their cushion over the final eight minutes to finish off the victory.


“We hit some big shots at critical times,” Roland-Story head coach Justin Morton said. “It was great to see us come out and shoot with some confidence after struggling Tuesday night against Gilbert. I thought our intensity and energy on defense was a huge factor and helped us to play with a lot of confidence at both ends of the floor. It was a huge team win and confidence builder for us going into the postseason.”


Free throws played a decisive role in the Roland-Story victory. The Norse were 14 of 18 from the line and North Polk was 8 of 14.


Roland-Story shot 35 percent from the field with nine 3-pointers and North Polk made 38 percent of its field goals with eight baskets from downtown. Roland-Story had nine turnovers to the Comets’ 10 and North Polk held a slim 34-33 rebounding advantage.


Sophomores Reagan Barkema and Reece Johnson combined for 39 points in the win for Roland-Story.


Barkema went for 22 points after making six field goals - including four 3-pointers - and all six of her free-throw attempts. She also pulled down nine rebounds and delivered two steals.


Johnson scored 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field and a 3 of 4 effort from 3-point range. She also contributed four rebounds and one steal.


Amy Rathmacher had six points, seven rebounds and three assists and Madeline Morton six points, two assists, one steal and one block for Roland-Story. Juliann Clark did a great job directing the Norse attack, tallying four points, eight assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block.


Dani Grady chipped in three points and an assist and Madison Martindale one point for the Norse.


Jaedon Murphy posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and she also had three assists, two steals and two blocks to lead North Polk. Maggie Phipps added 12 points, seven rebounds and one block, Makayla Boatman 10 points and Hannah Foster nine points and four rebounds for the Comets.

STORY CITY — Roland-Story did what it needed to do on defense against Gilbert Jan. 28, but the shots wouldn’t fall for the Norse in a 41-36 loss to the Tigers.


Roland-Story held Gilbert to 31-percent shooting. The Norse also had just 10 turnovers and they forced 11 in the Heart of Iowa Conference showdown between two of the top three teams in the conference.


But in the end Roland-Story, a top-10 Class 3A team, couldn’t overcome a 29-percent shooting from the field and a 7 of 16 showing from the line against a top-10 4A school. The Norse fell to 12-2 on the season and 6-2 in the HOIC, with both of their losses coming to Gilbert.


Gilbert led a defensive battle at the half, 14-11. Roland-Story pulled within 29-28 after three quarters, but the Norse cooled off offensively down the stretch to allow the Tigers to hold on and improve to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the conference.


Madeline Morton hit three of Roland-Story’s five 3-pointers and she finished with 13 points and two assists in a losing effort. Reagan Barkema had six points and a block, Amy Rathmacher five points, four rebounds, three steals and a block and Juliann Clark three points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.


Kylie Tjernagel also scored three points, Reece Johnson had two points and four assists and Dani Grady and Madison Martindale each put up two points.


Ava Hawthorne led Gilbert with a game-high 18 points and she added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Nessa Johnson chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Thea Rotto seven points, seven rebounds and a block for the Tigers.
