Marah Hartrick’s squeeze play in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner and New London High School ousted North Mahaska, 3-2, in the Class 1A, Region 6 softball tournament semifinals at New Sharon Friday night.
New London (10-6) advances to Monday’s regional championship game against fourth-ranked Lynnville-Sully at Lynville-Sully. That winner advances to the state tournament.
North Mahaska took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That held until the fifth inning when New London’s Ashlyn McSorley ripped a two-run homer to tie the score.
In New London’s top of the eighth, Kara Krieger singled to center with one out. McSorley walked and the runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Hartrick executed the squeeze bunt and Krieger scored with what proved to be the winning run.
Freshman Elly Manning (8-5) was the winning pitcher. She gave up two unearned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in eight innings.
Krieger had two hits, including a double. McSorley’s homer and a single by Sofie Reighard were the only other New London hits.
Friday’s game avenged a 2019 loss to North Mahaska in the regional second round.
NO. 2 L-M 6, WEST BRANCH 5: Second-ranked Louisa-Muscatine needed an extra inning to edge past West Branch in a Class 2A, Region 8 semifinal game at Letts.
Louisa-Muscatine was limited to four hits — singles by Kylee Sanders, McKenna Hohenadel, Brynn Jeambey and Morgan Stecher. Kylee Sanders, Hohenadel, Hailey Sanders and Jeambey each drove in a run.
Hailey Sanders was the winning pitcher. She gave up five runs, three earned, on six hits and no walks in eight innings. She struck out 13.
Mackenzie Heise homered and drove in two runs for West Branch. Nicki Henson had two singles in four trips. Kaiya Luneckas was the losing pitcher.
Louisa-Muscatine (17-4) hosts No. 13 Wilton (14-3) Monday for the regional championship.
NO. 13 WILTON 3, WAPELLO 0: Madelyn Welch tripled and drove in two runs to lead No. 13 Wilton to victory in the Class 2A, Region 8 semifinals at Wilton.
Wilton will face No. 2 Louisa-Muscatine at Letts Monday for the regional championship.
Mila Johnson picked up the win for Wilton.
MOUNT PLEASANT 9, FORT MADISON 2: The Bloodhounds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then wouldn’t score again in the Class 3A, District 9 semifinal at Mount Pleasant.
Rylan Seberg led Mount Pleasant with a double, two singles, two runs and two RBIs in four trips to the plate. Nik Coble doubled and homered and Clayton Lowery singled and homered for the Panthers. Jack Johnson hit a double. Coble was the winning pitcher in four innings work.
Landes Williams and Jace Burgher both had two hits for Fort Madison. Williams was the losing pitcher.
Mount Pleasant advances to Monday’s district championship game against Davenport Assumption in Davenport’s Modern Woodmen Park.
ASSUMPTION 12, KEOKUK 0: The Knights erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and ended the game early.
Jay Costello led Assumption (19-4) with two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases. Seth Adrian hit a home run and drove in three runs.
Keokuk ended its season at 1-17.
