ACTORS and Children’s Theater are pleased to warm your winter night with Free to Be… You and Me. The award winning Free to Be… You and Me came about when Marlo Thomas went looking for a bedtime book to read to her niece. She was shocked to find that so many children’s books reinforced old gender stereo-types of what girls and boys were supposed to be. Few of them talked about all the possibilities of what they could be.

Free to Be… You and Me began as a record and was transformed into a series of books, and later became a television special. It has won Peabody, Emmy, and American Library Association Awards. Encompassing the works and talents of such greats as Mel Brooks, Carol Hall, Shel Silverstein, Mary Rodgers, and Judy Blume, this show has become a timeless classic.

Many of the production-staff first worked on this show 30 years ago and insisted on being a part of the show. This show brings together a talented company of 38 performers from Ames, Des Moines, Nevada, Huxley, Story City and Johnston. Story City mother-daughter duo Mary Howell Sirna and Ella Sirna are featured in the cast.

Free to Be…You and Me opens November 29 and runs for three weekends at ACTORS, the Ames Community Theater, 120 Abrahram Drive, Ames. Tickets are available at Gallery 319, in Ames.
