Virginia Swenson opened the meeting at 6:40 pm. with 7 members present. Our colors were advanced. The Pledge of Allegiance was said. Our Chaplain, Mildred Olson, gave a devotional and prayer. After singing a song, the Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion Auxiliary was recited.

Angela Schnurstein, Secretary, read the minutes from the May 20, 2014 meeting. Becky Watson made a motion to approve the minutes as read and it was approved by all.

The treasurer’s report was given by treasurer, Virginia Swenson. Mildred Olson made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report and it was approved by all.

Membership chair, Virginia Swenson, reported that we have 49 paid members for 2014. Of those, 48 were senior members and one was a junior member. This is now the beginning of our 2015 auxiliary year. Our dues are still $25 for senior members and $5 for junior members. Our goal for 2015 is to have 48 members total.

Old Business/Communications: A thank you note was received from Rick Frette’s family in his memory. They have donated over $1,000 in his memory for the Freedom Flights. The 2014/2015 leadership training will be August 18, 2014 at 6 pm at the American Legion Building in Nevada. A light meal will be served at 6 pm. Anyone from the unit can attend.

Unfinished Business: Angela Schnurstein, Emma Schnurstein, Mason Schnurstein, Carol Vekre, Dianne Swenson, Mildred Olson, and Meko Martin collected over $50 in distributing poppies in May 2014. Thank you to all members and helpers distributing poppies this year.

Becky Watson shared that everything has been picked up from the graves, except one cemetery. She found out that we also have two Auxiliary members at the Gilbert cemetery and Becky will give the flags to a gentleman she contacted and he will place them on the grave sites. Becky will be asking Brenda Mortvedt about the cost of printing/ making flags and how few we can order. We probably need about 10-15 more flags for next year.

New Business: The state of Iowa veterans will still be making poppies for units to purchase. We have a need for more greenery/sprays for next year 2015. Virginia Swenson will check into getting more small wreath/greenery from Michaels, Wal-Mart, or Hobby Lobby. She will check on the cost and availability of us ordering and having them by April. Mildred Olson will check in on this also with the Story City Floral shop.

Dianne Swenson stated that we need to think about preparing some things for the month of September. September 11th is a day to remember. Sept. 20th is the POW/MIA Recognition Day and we talked about ordering a drape for a chair in memory of this. Becky Watson will contact someone in Story City to find out about the Boy Scout/Cub Scout troops helping in some way with the distribution.
