• The FCS exploratory classes at the middle school have been creating some delicious foods and sewing awesome pillows and projects! It has been so cool to see the creativity and teamwork in each of the classes. Mrs. Shorkey and this class also made all of the desserts for the Senior Citizens luncheon.

• Mrs. Nielsen’s class was recently awarded the Outstanding Youth Philanthropist Award by the Story County Alliance for Philanthropy. Mrs. Nielsen, along with Mrs.Tyron, Mrs. Hartzler, Mallory Wolff, Matthew Kepler and Rogan DeWald attended a luncheon held at Gateway Hotel & Conference Center. They were given this award for the work they do with the Penny Drive and then shopping for Angel Tree kids at Christmastime. The class shopped for gifts for 3 different Angel Tree students in our community this year. Penny Drive money was used to purchase these gifts, which included clothes and toys. The kids then wrapped the gifts and delivered them to the church. This is always such a rewarding project! The kids were awesome helpers!

• Congratulations to the Roland-Story Jazz Band on being the SCIBA jazz champions again this year. This is the ninth consecutive year that R-S has won this award! R-S was in competition with the following 2A schools: Albia, Central Decatur, Des Moines Christian, Earlham, Ogden, North Polk, Van Meter, and Woodward-Granger. Roland-Story will be performing at the Iowa Jazz Championships in Des Moines on March 31st.

• Middle school students in Mrs. Vinson’s science classes recently completed a 10-day DARE program. Our thanks to Chief Deputy Holmes of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department who taught DARE again this year.

• On December 10th the senior Roland-Story basketball players accompanied 12 middle school students to participate in “Toys for Tots” by helping them pick out gifts. This is a great project, and we commend all the coaches involved from the middle school for this venture. Senior players participating were: Kirsten Waline, Taylor Olson, Alyssa Miller, Lexi Crutchfield, Bridget Concannon, Britney Hammes, Adam Shorkey, Josiah Soderstrum, Austin Jewell and Jerald Fritz.

• Wishes to you and your family for a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year from the Roland-Story Community School District!
