Governor Terry E. Branstad signed a proclamation making April KEEP IOWA BEAUTIFUL MONTH. The statewide proclamation encourages Iowans to work together to make their communities better places to live and work through beautification, clean-up and recycling activities.

Five Ways Iowans Can Help

During Keep Iowa Beautiful month there are five easy ways Iowans can honor the Governor’s proclamation and strengthen the pride of their communities. Consider these ideas:

Organize to clean it up! Love to be outdoors? Turn your passion for hiking, running, boating gardening and more into a clean-up mission. Collect trash along trails, sidewalks, waterfronts and public spaces in your community.

Report litter! Did you know that you can do something about littering! Call 1.888.NOLITTR (1-888-665-4887) to report when someone litters from a vehicle. Your anonymous call to the No-Litter Hotline allows you to report the description and license plate number of the vehicle, the time when and location where the litter was thrown from the vehicle, what was thrown from the vehicle. Drivers will be contacted by the Iowa State Troopers and warned about their littering actions.

Plant it up! Well maintained community gardens make the entrances and main streets of Iowa’s communities shine! Organize a volunteer gardening group to grow a stronger community by creating, planting and maintaining a community garden.

Paint it up! Freshen up community buildings and structures with new paint. Organize a volunteer painting party to identify and improve the exteriors of buildings, fences, signs, fire hydrants, benches and park facilities.

Become a Keep Iowa Beautiful sponsor! Support Keep Iowa Beautiful programs that:

*Make main streets more attractive

*Improve the buildings in Iowa towns

*Spruce up homes and add fresh paint to areas that need it

*Educate towns on how to improve the look of their community

As the Proclamation stateed, “Keep Iowa Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, works with government organizations, private companies, communities and volunteer/service groups statewide to conduct litter prevention, recycling, beautification, community and landscape enhancement, increased volunteerism and waste minimization programs…”

For more than 16 years Keep Iowa Beautiful has worked to empower Iowans to make Iowa the cleanest and most attractive state in the nation.
