We are in the last full week of July, and August means that school is just around the corner. Tuesday afternoon programs for our school children (K.O.O.L.) wrapped up this week with the final program featuring Jester Puppets, a fabulous puppeteer company. Our last pre-school program will be on Thursday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m. , and the Tween Book club members, who are reading “Capture the Flag” has their last discussion on Friday, August 5 with their wrap-up event on the ISU campus on August 9. Remember that just because the special programs have completed, the independent reading logs for all ages can be completed up to August 22, the last day before students are back in the classroom.

The Children’s department will be taking a break from programming most of the month of August, with Pre-school Storytime and KOOL officially restarting the week of August 29. There will be some re-vamping of our schedule, based on conflicts discussed over the summer, so Preschool Storytime will no longer be on Mondays and Thursdays, they will be on Tuesdays and Fridays, both at 10:30 a.m.

We are excited to offer an evening program on Tuesday, August 16 which should interest both youth and adults. On this evening we will meet three young ladies who will be living in the United States for the next year, as part of an international youth exchange. These young ladies are part of the Future Leaders Exchange program (FLEX). Two of our presenters are from Tajikistan, while one is from the Ukraine. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will provide an opportunity for them to meet our community, allow them to practice their English skills, and introduce us to their homeland. We have been lucky enough to have met some of the youth participating with this exchange in the past, and I am excited to meet this new group!

As you may have read elsewhere, the library is also teaming up with the Story City Greater Chamber Connection, the Story City Historical Society and the City of Story City to sponsor the 11th annual Story!Festival, scheduled for the 3rd weekend of September (September 15-17). The festival will feature Pippa White and La’Ron Williams, both beloved professional tellers. They will be featured at the Thursday night dinner, the schools on Friday, conducting workshops on Saturday and wrapping up with performances on Saturday afternoon and evening!

This unique festival is a treasure to Story City….bringing professional talent with warm hearts and spirited drama and humor to our community. It’s an event envied by its uniqueness, and it teaches us all how to become better…at sharing family stories, speaking publicly, re-sharing historical events, in an entertaining and exciting way. These are the best of the best, so if you are not familiar with this festival, you are in for a treat! And if you have attended before, you know this is something you don’t want to miss!
