Candidate forum and pool Q&A

The Roland Public Library is hosting a City Council Candidate Forum and Swimming Pool Q&A on Sunday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at the library. The three city council candidates on the March 5 city ballot,Joseph Corrow, Russ Neely and Kailah Schmitz, have been invited to participate. The forum will provide the opportunity for the candidates to share their vision for Roland and answer questions regarding community matters. Following the 30-minute candidate forum, information about the swimming pool bond issue will be presented.

Wizard of Oz

Roland-Story High School is presenting the musical “Wizard of Oz” on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets are available at the high school office. The cost is $5 per ticket.

Bergen Family Feast

Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland will hold its annual Bergen Family Feast on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal will be a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Everyone is welcome and carry-outs are available.

Ribbon Cutting

There will be a ribbon cutting party to welcome Simply Mae’s Boutique on Thursday, March 7, at 4:30 p.m. Simply Mae’s is locally owned by a mother and daughter, Cande Coulter and Jessi Kettenacker. Located at 618 Broad St., Suite A, the women’s boutique focuses on simple comfort and everyday style in sizes small through 3XL. Drinks and snacks will be provided at the party, where guests are welcome to socialize and shop until 7 p.m.

JSTT auditions

Judge Story’s Theatrical Troupe (JSTT) will hold auditions in Story City for the 2019 summer musical, “Children of Eden.” Auditions will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, and from 2 to 5 p.m on Sunday, March 3.

Call-back auditions will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 3. Auditions will be held in the JSTT rehearsal space above Dinners by Dawn, 516 Broad St., in Story City. Those auditioning are asked to bring a musical theatre song to perform. Piano accompaniment will be provided. Performances will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, as well as Thursday through Sunday, June 6 through 9. Roles are available for both adults and children.

Summary: Children of Eden is a two-act production with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by John Caird. It is based on the Book of Genesis, with Act I telling the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden while Act II focuses on Noah and the Flood. American Legion Post 59

The Story City American Legion Post 59, 301 Washington St., is hosting karaoke night on Friday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. The public is invited to come in and join the fun!

Dinner of tenderloin and fries will be served Monday, March 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. The cost is $6.

A taco feed will be held Wednesday, March 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Play Bingo from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Beekeeping workshop

Iowa State University Extension will hold a beekeeping workshop on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada extension office, 220 H Ave. The class is free and open to the public. To RSVP or get more information, email

Stitch ‘n’ Knit

Stitch ‘n’ Knit meets at Bertha Bartlett Public Library at 10 a.m. every Friday. If you knit, crochet or stitch anything by hand, come enjoy an hour of fellowship with other crafters. Remember to bring a project to keep your hands busy.

Play cards

At 1 p.m. on Friday, March 1, at the Story City Community Center, people age 55 and over are invited to play bridge club and/or the card game “Hand and Foot.” No reservations or charge required, but a snack to share is appreciated.

Fellowship luncheon

On Wednesday, March 6, a Fellowship luncheon will be at 11 a.m. at the Story City Community Center. The cost is $4 per person age 55 and over. The delicious meals are catered by Story City Market’s deli. A monthly menu and contact information can be picked up at the center. Bring your own table service or buy supplies for 25 cents. Future Happenings

Moon Rocks

Bertha Bartlett Public Library in Story City will host a Moon Rocks and Meteorites program on March 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to this free event to see genuine moon rocks and meteorites up close and personal. The lunar samples and meteorite particles are on loan from NASA. Participants will be able to inspect the rocks, which will be contained in protective material. Space-based experiments and activities will be conducted.

Fish Fry

Saints Peter and Paul Church, 14238 500th Ave., Ames, is holding a fish fry on Friday, March 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $9 for adults, $4 for children 5-12, and free for kids under 5. The meal is sponsored by the Ss. Peter and Paul Knights of Columbus Council No. 15060 and proceeds will go to the council’s charitable causes.
