Bertha Bartlett Library hosts ‘Amazing Race’
—by Denise Froehlich
Area tweens and teens had a blast doing an Amazing Race around downtown Story City on July 12, 2016, for the final program of the summer events at Bertha Bartlett Public Library. The race encouraged participants to “Get in the game!”, the theme of the teen 2016 Summer Reading Program.
Tweens and teens, ages 10 to 18, started at the library and raced to specified locations around Story City. They completed challenges such as learning and performing the UNI Interlude Dance, detours (choosing between two challenge options) and road blocks (counting all the flags in a four-block area) before returning to the library for the final pit stop. The race course included stops at the Story City Lifetime Fitness Center, the Sheldall Schoolhouse (Museums of Story City), the Upper Story Studio, the Story City Greater Chamber Connection, the Story City Fire Department and Kum & Go.
We would like to thank all of the participants for giving the race your best efforts and showing great teamwork. We had twelve special volunteers, some of whom took time off from work to help with the race. The library received many generous donations from area businesses, which helped make the BBPL Amazing Race a great success with monetary donations. We would especially like to thank Harlan’s Food Mart for the donation of several cases of water and treats.
The race is part of the 2016 Summer Reading Program and concludes the programming portion of the program. The reading challenge continues until August 22. Tweens and teens are encouraged to come into the library and read for prizes, including a package of 2 tickets to an Iowa State football game and a package of 4 tickets to an Iowa Wild hockey game.
