Sunday, Sept. 27, marked the last public operating hours of the 2020 season for the Story City Antique Carousel. Private events and rentals will be available through October.

The year 2020 has been an unprecedented and challenging year for us all. Under the leadership of the Greater Chamber Connection board and staffed by GCC/Carousel staff, the Story City Carousel opened on July 2 and operated until the normally scheduled closing day the last Sunday of September.

Although smiles couldn't be seen under their masks, the enjoyment and excitement of each child, parent or grandparent was evident during each visit.

A huge thank you to staff Jay Wilson, Shanon McKinley, Megan Gustafson, Valerie Hubert and Kat Hawley for operating the carousel for the entire 2020 season. Thanks to the 30 volunteers plus the Story City Fire Department who stepped up in April and May to clean the building interior following construction even when it was unknown if opening day would occur. Special thanks to all the donors and contractors of the carousel's exterior building renovation project. When first proposed in 2018, no one dreamed it would be completed during a pandemic. And as always, thanks to the carousel maintenance committee who effortlessly keeps everything moving.

But perhaps the biggest thank you of all is to the riders of Story City and the surrounding communities for their continued support.  Other carousels across the United States, many from larger cities, have struggled this year with the difficult decisions, and potentially devastating financial impact on their operation.  While the Story City carousel missed not having its volunteer appreciation/donor thank you event, or its Light's On celebration, or seeing everyone at Scandinavian Days, the carousel will be there next year, ready to welcome everyone back.  Just as it has done for the last 107 years.  See you in 2021.
