While the 2020 Summer Reading Program did not happen as originally planned, we had great response to our adapted program. In lieu of earning small incentives throughout the summer, we presented ‘incentive bags’ to patrons in the 2-12 age range which contained a reading log, a variety of activities, incentives and reading materials to get them started on their summer reading. Reading programs were also offered for Babies & Toddlers, Tweens & Teens and Adults with a total of 264 participants.

Patrons across all age ranges spent a considerable amount of their time reading this summer – as evidenced by the number of entries in our Grand Prize drawings.  We are pleased to have awarded Grand Prizes to the following youth patrons:

Bertha Bartlett Grand Prize drawing winners: TJ (Storybook Daycare), Tristan Ellig, Oren VandeGrind, Annaka Hansen, Sadie Watson, Kase Reifschneider, Leo Schulteis, Blake Trout, Amara Hansen, Cambrie Sloan, Jaden Reinert, Eli Van Hove and Hayden Gossel.

Gilbert Grand Prize drawing winners: Jaida Everett, Olivia Cox, Bernadette Martinson, Bayley Hintz, Andrew Hansen, Everett Becker, Cecilia Martinson, Daisha Cox, Lillian Dahlstrom, Andrew Dahm.

Thank you to all who participated in our Babies & Toddlers, Kids (Ages 2-12), Tweens & Teens, and Adult Reading Programs and congratulations to our Grand Prize winners!

Both the Bertha Bartlett and Gilbert Libraries would also like to express our deepest gratitude to all of our sponsors: 3M; The Bertha Bartlett Library Foundation; Bill Scott; Casey’s; Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines – Tradix Fund; Dairy Queen – Story City; Hallmark; McDonald’s; Perfect Games; Phillip McCrea – in memory of his wife, Lucy; Van Wall Equipment; Wells Fargo.

The Summer Reading Program would not have been as successful without your most generous support!

Summer programming is in the books but there are still plenty of things to do at the library! We are now offering Grab & Go Activity bags including weekly ‘STEM in Your Day’ packets in collaboration with ISU Extension & Outreach.  These packets can be used independently, interactively while viewing the weekly ISU STEM Zoom program (Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m.) or the Zoom program can be viewed without the packet. Please contact the library for further information.
