The Ames Haunted Forest will send shivers down the spines of visitors. Children will dress in costumes in towns all over Story and Boone counties and go door-to-door during each town's official trick-or-treating or Beggars' Night.

Traditional Halloween events and activities are back after many were canceled or modified last year due to the pandemic, and organizers and participants alike seem to be especially excited about the return to witchy normal.

The Ames Tribune has a list of spooky and fun events that will be happening in Story and Boone counties:

Trick-or-treating in Story County

  • Ames: Sunday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 
  • Downtown Ames: Trick-or-treat at downtown Ames businesses on Friday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Ames Public Library: Trick-or-treat at the library. Stop by Ames Public Library during Downtown Trick-or-Treat Friday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Altrusa of Ames will give out free books for young children, while supplies last. 
  • North Grand Mall: Malloween and Trunk-or-Treat, Thursday, Oct. 28, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. North Grand Mall and Story County Reads are teaming up for this event, which will offer free candy, books and fun activities. The event will be held inside the mall and outside in the north parking lot. Information about afterschool programs will also be available.
  • Cambridge: Sunday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Downtown Cambridge: Sunday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Trunk-or-treat on Third Street between Water and Main streets. Hot dogs, hot cocoa and water provided free of charge. 
  • Collins: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Colo: Sunday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Gilbert: Sunday, Oct. 31, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Huxley: Sunday, Oct. 31, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Kelley: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Maxwell: Sunday, Oct. 31, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • McCallsburg: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Nevada: Sunday, Oct. 31, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Downtown Nevada: Main Street Nevada is hosting trick-or-treating at local businesses on Friday, Oct. 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Roland: Sunday, Oct. 31, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Sheldahl: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Slater: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Story City: Friday, Oct. 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Zearing: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Community Harvest Party

Heartland Baptist Church, 3333 Stange Road in Ames, is hosting a Community Harvest Party, Sunday, Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be Bible-themed trunk-or-treat, food, fun games and a photo booth. The public is invited.

Ames Haunted Forest

Ames Haunted Forest started scaring visitors on Friday, Oct. 8 and will be open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night in October. Admission is $25.

The Haunted Forest is located near Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium, on South Fourth Street, east of University Boulevard, at 1400 S. Fourth St.

Tours last about 30 minutes and are "fear-packed excitement and the scariest walk you'll take all year!", according to the website.

Trick-or-treat schedule

  • Boone: Sunday, Oct. 31, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Trunk or Treat on Story Street – On Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., get candy from Boone County businesses.
  • Madrid: Saturday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ogden: Sunday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Boone student council haunted house and carnival

  • 5-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, for youth in grades K-8 at Boone High School, 500 7th St.

Madrid Public Library, 100 W. Third St.

  • Trick-or-treat at the Library returns Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a lighted story walk and candy.
