The trend in early holiday shopping continues, but the National Retail Federation is predicting nearly 2 million more people will shop between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday this year than last.

About two-thirds of shoppers plan to shop during Black Friday weekend this year, according to a survey conducted by NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics.

An estimated 158 million people plan to holiday shop during the long Thanksgiving weekend, up from about 156 million last year, according to the survey. The shopping numbers still haven’t bounced back to the pre-pandemic figure of 165 million in 2019.

“We’re expecting another record-breaking holiday season this year and Thanksgiving weekend will play a major role as it always has,” Matthew Shay, NRF president and CEO, said in a news release. “Nonetheless, consumers are starting earlier than ever to be sure they can get what they want, when they want it, at a price they want to pay. Black Friday stopped being a one-day event years ago, and this year some consumers started shopping for Christmas as early as Halloween.”

The survey found 108 million people plan to shop on Black Friday, 63 million on Cyber Monday and 58 million on Small Business Saturday. Thirty million people plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day, either online or in-store.

Major retailers in Ames all plan to be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but each has a strong online presence where they are offering Black Friday deals.

“For those shopping during the weekend, deals that are ‘too good to pass up’ remain the top reason, cited by 58 percent, but tradition continued to come in second at 28 percent,” the news release stated.
