Story City has placed a Christmas tree in the middle of the street downtown since 1914.

Story City continues its long-standing tradition of featuring a large Christmas tree in the middle of Broad Street with a tree lighting ceremony during its Yulefest celebration on Friday, Nov. 26.

The beloved holiday tradition started in 1914 when Story City became one of the first municipalities to display a tree decorated with electric lights, according to the Story City Historical Society.

The tradition continued every year with a few exceptions, such as the years during World War II.

The tree is erected and decorated by the crew at Story City Municipal Electric.

The celebration on Friday, Nov. 26 will kick off with the annual chili supper at the Story City Fire Station, 512 Park St., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A free-will donation will be accepted, with proceeds used to purchase equipment.

Santa will make an appearance at the fire station and kids will have a chance to decorate cookies.

The tree lighting festivities will start at 6 p.m. around the tree, which is located at the intersection of Broad Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. For those who are not able to attend, a Facebook Live video will be streamed from the Story City Greater Connection's Facebook page.

The Story Theater will be showing the Disney movie "Encanto" at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
