The cold temperatures and recent dusting of snow are sure signs that winter is here and the holiday season is fast approaching. The Story City community and the Story City GCC are in full swing with a full calendar of events for this holiday season. Things start off the day after Thanksgiving, November 29th. Many of our local Story City businesses will be open and ready to greet shoppers as they search for those perfect one of a kind gifts. You will want to be sure to stick around for the Annual Yulefest Tree Lighting ceremony. Please join us downtown for caroling beginning at 5:15 p.m., followed by the lighting of the tree at 5:30 p.m. The Story City Fire Department will be having their annual chili supper immediately following the tree lighting at the fire station. The supper is a free-will donation event with the funds raised going to the purchase of new equipment. Santa will also be making a visit to the fire station. Bring the kids out to enjoy the warm chili, visit with Santa, and decorate a holiday cookie.

Santa will also be visiting the Story City Outlet Mall on November 30th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a free event for kids where they can decorate cookies, play games and visit with Santa. Photography By Danny will be providing photos with Santa. Parents will be able to enter a drawing to win prizes from participating mall stores.

The Story City GCC will be holding its annual Yulefest Day for Kids on December 7th at Carousel Lanes. This is a fun filled day beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the Elves Workshop where children, ages 2 through elementary, can do arts and crafts. It is a free event; however, due to its popularity and limited space, reservations are required. Please contact the Story City GCC office at (515) 733-4214 to make your reservations. Parents and kids are invited to stay and have lunch with Santa at the Carousel Lanes from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (you are responsible for purchasing your own lunch). Family Bowling will cap off the day’s events and will be $1.50 per person from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

December 7th is the Christmas Extravaganza. This event is free of charge and will highlight forty local performers in a one hour variety show. Live music will accompany dancers and singers as they ring in the Christmas season. It will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the Harvest E-Free Church.

December 7th and 8th, will be the Story City Yulefest Tour of Homes from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. You won’t want to miss visiting these area homes that have been all decked out for the holidays. Jim and Judy Handsaker, Dan and Pat Seitsinger, and Ray and Rhonda Hampton have so generously agreed to be a part of this year’s event. Tickets are $6.00 and may be purchased from the Story City Greater Chamber Connection, NuCara Pharmacy, from any Quester or P.E.O Chapter FZ member, or at any home on tour days. The Historical Society will also be serving complimentary refreshments at the Bartlett Museum during the tour hours. At the Bartlett House, the Historical Society will be holding a 12 days of Christmas themed scavenger hunt during the Tour of Homes weekend. Images representing the gifts in the song will be placed throughout the house. Participants who find all 12 images will be entered into a drawing for a Story City themed gift basket.

The community’s holiday season of events wrap up on Wednesday, December 18th. The Story Theater/Grand Opera House will be presenting a special variety program/concert. Tickets for this event are scheduled to go on sale the first part of December to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Stay tuned for more details. The proceeds for the event will go towards the Story Theater Historical Foundation and the digital motion picture conversion project.

There is no need to go elsewhere to celebrate this holiday season. The Story City GCC and the Story City community have a number of events for people of all ages. So, please come out Friday, November 29th to kick off the holiday season with a Story City tradition, the lighting of the Christmas tree!
