When I stop at Main Streets across Iowa and the United States the first things I visually notice are the buildings, and after that, the public art. Story City has great building stock, but an absence of public art downtown. We at the Greater Chamber Connection want to work at adding just a touch of color to downtown, while also encouraging our local artists to participate and raise money for downtown beautification. That is why we are launching our 2X2XWho? Project.

The 2X2XWho? Project is a concept that I first saw in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has become very successful and grown across their New Bohemian district. We have decided to try this project here in Story City and I believe we can be just as successful.

Here is how it works: An artist of any age comes into the Greater Chamber Connection office and purchases a $10 2’ by 2’ canvas from us. They then take them home and draw, stencil, paint, or decorate them however the artist wishes to expresses themselves. They will then return their art to us by August 12th and we will hang them up in business windows all over downtown. During our progressive dinner on August 17th we will ask the public to vote for their favorites and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Our hope is to keep these beautiful pieces of art on display through the end of September and then they will be returned to the artists.

If this sounds like a project you would like to participate in please stop into the Greater Chamber Connection office and grab your canvas and start creating something amazing. We are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 524 Broad Street.
