Illinois State holds off NWMSU in exhibition game

Taking the court for the first time under new head coach Barb Smith, the Illinois State women’s basketball team defeated Division II’s Northwest Missouri State 55-50 in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3, at Redbird Arena in Normal, IL. Chloe Nelson led the Redbirds with 16 points, followed by Stekara Hall with 13. Roland-Story alum Maddie Oliver, now in her third year at ISU, scored eight points, including four down a key stretch late in the game after NWMSU had tied it at 46-46 with 4.29 remaining. A 6-0 run by ISU broke the tie and enabled the Redbirds to regain control and seal the victory.

ISU officially opens the 2013-14 season Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Northern Kentucky, followed by another road gamea at DePaul on Nov. 18. The Redbirds return to Doug Collins Court on Nov. 23 against Colorado State.
