Roland-Story volleyball season wrap up and awards

The Roland-Story girls’ volleyball season came to an abrupt end when the Norse lost in the second round of the 3A Regional to Columbus Catholic 3-0. The Norsemen finished 22-11 overall and placed second (8-1) in the Heart of Iowa Conference behind only the champion Nevada Cubs (9-0).

Coach Molly Geise had some questions and concerns going into this season, but it didn’t take long for things to come together. The Norsemen soon began to gel as a team, and at one point midway through the season they reeled off 11 victories in 12 matches. The Norse girls also managed to take runner-up honors at the Meskwaki, Perry and East Marshall tournaments. Before falling in the regional second round, R-S easily defeated South Hardin in their 3A Regional opener.

The Roland-Story varsity squad was made up of seven seniors, eight juniors and one sophomore. Letterwinners totaled 11 and included seniors Lauren Himan, Bryce Holmgren, Kaylee Knutson, Hope Sievers, Taylor Olson, Alyssa Miller and Mari Henrichs, plus juniors Alexa Whipple, Kelsey Polaski, Maggie Schnurr and Jacey Ellis.

Team awards were handed out at the end-of-season banquet. They included: MVP - Lauren Himan, Most Improved Player - Jacey Ellis, Best Practice Player - Taylor Olson, Best Team Player - Alyssa Miller, Hustle Award - Kelsey Polaski, Most Inspirational Player - Alexa Whipple, Off the Bench Award - Kaylee Knutson, Norse Award - Alyssa Miller and 2014 Captains Award - Alexa Whipple and Maggie Schnurr. The team awards were voted on by the team members themselves. The girls were coached by Molly Geise and assisted by Amy Adams (J.V.) and Natalie Whipple (Freshmen). Managers were Kate Faga and Eli Jennings.

All Conference, as well as other state and district awards, were also recently announced. Named to the Heart of Iowa Conference first team were Lauren Himan (unanimous) and Alexa Whipple. Kelsey Polaski was selected to the second team. Receiving honorable mention were Alyssa Miller and Taylor Olson.

Lauren Himan also was named to the first team 3A Central All State District team, second team 3A Des Moines Sunday Register All State team and the third team Class 3A All State squad. Lauren was also just recently named the Ames Tribune Player of the Year. Joining Lauren on the Tribune’s All Area team was teammate Alexa Whipple.

All Academic honors also found several of the R-S players named as well, including the HOIAC and All State selections. Named academic all conference were Lauren Himan, Chelsey Tinken, Bailey Balmer, Taylor Olson, Bryce Holmgren, Hope Sievers, Kelsey Polaski, Maria Taylor, Brooke Huffaker, Alyssa Miller, Mari Henrichs, Jacey Ellis, Hanna Henderson, Maggie Schnurr, Samantha Reisinger and Kate Faga.

Recognized all state academic were Lauren Himan, Bryce Holmgren and Hope Sievers.

The Norsemen J.V. team included: Samantha Reisinger, Lexi Georgius, Maggie Schnurr, Dalani Phillips, Chelsey Tinken, McKenna Magnuson, Bailey Balmer, Natalie Tryon, Pressly Parker, Karla Carvalho, Hanna Henderson, Krista Mehl, Brooke Huffaker, Samantha Janvrin, Andie Phillips, Clara Brochhausen, Jacey Ellis, Jaeda Pitman and Maria Taylor.

The R-S freshmen squad was made of Megan Hodnefield, Jessica Eslick, Madeline Carlson, Sydney Mathis, Jenna Clark, Hannah Patton, Paighton Smith, Josie Manzer, Aimee Lundy, Kyra Fuller, Megan Goeders, Madison Friest, Veronika Johnson, Riley Holmgren and Hailey Lowe.
