On Thursday Dec. 11, the Norse wrestlers hosted Greene County and came away with a big win. After a busy weekend before the Norse got down to business and back on the winning track. Leading off for the Norse was Maverick Larson at 170, who was pinned in 1:14. At 182, Aaron Gray received a forfeit, then Sam Mathis at 194 pinned his opponent in 3:35, followed by Tanner Stille at 220 with a pin in 2:58. Tanner dominated his opponent prior to getting his pin. Ryan Hadaway, who will see limited action this season, came in at 285 and earned the forfeit. At 106, Max Halstead was pinned in 1:54, and both Zach Anderson at 113 and Kameron Turnbill at 120 received forfeits. Parker Witthuhn at 126 continues to dominate his opponents as he pinned his man in 1:17. A line up change on this night saw Will Clark at 132 hold on until the third period, before he was pinned in 4:38. Tyson Manzer at 138 was pinned in 3:45, and Bill Joslin at 145 was also pinned in 33 seconds. Treyton Witthuhn at 152 received a forfeit and Paden Pugh at 160 was pinned in 1:14 to round out the meet for the Norse. Final score was R-S 48, GC 36.

“Greene County is a very physical team and they have some very good individuals,” said Head Coach Leland Schwartz. “They won the conference tournament last year and will be in contention for it again this year because of those good individuals. They aren’t as good of a dual team because of the open spots in their line up. I was most impressed with Tanner Stille’s match. He was very aggressive and racked up a bunch of points before securing the fall.”

The Norse are now sitting in a good position in the conference dual standings with a 2-0 record. They can push that to 4-0 with a double dual meet on Thursday against Nevada and PCM. “I project PCM to be near the top of the conference at the end of the season,” added Schwartz, “so this (week) will be a good test for us.”

JV wrestlers that saw action last Thursday were Andrew Braland, who had two matches and lost both by pins. Will Halstead posted a pin in 1:09, and Cameron Hill also posted a pin in 1:58.

On Saturday the Norse Varsity was in action at the Saydel Tournament where seven wrestlers earned a trip to the medal stand. Parker Witthuhn was the lone champion for the Norse, winning the 126 lb. title. He is now 9-0 on the season, with eight pins, as he continues to dominate his opponents. Others placing for the Norsemen were Tyson Manzer (2nd at 132), Tanner Stille (2nd at 195), Sam Mathis (3rd at 182), Treyton Witthuhn (4th at 152), Bill Joslin (3rd at 145) and Zach Anderson (6th at 113).

As a whole the team finished a strong 5th place out of 11 teams competing with 118 points. Iowa Falls-Alden won the tournament with 159 1/2 points, followed by Boone (138), host Saydel (128 1/2) and DM North (119 1/2). Trailing the Norsemen were Carlisle (111 1/2), DM East (111), Pella (80), North Polk (77), DM Lincoln (69) and Lynnville-Sully (44).

“After the dual on Thursday, we talked about being more physical, and I think it showed on Saturday,” commented Coach Schwartz. “Overall, I was pleased with the way that we competed. We had four wrestlers place above their seeds, which is a key to performing well at a tournament. I would say the wrestler of the tournament would have to be Bill (Joslin). He had a great day, going 4-1, with all of his wins by fall. His only loss was to the top seeded Grant Sherman of Saydel, who is ranked 4th in 2A.”

This Thursday (Dec. 18) the Norse will travel to Nevada to participate in a double dual against PCM and Nevada, action starts at 6 p.m. Then on Friday night the JV team will be in action at the Norsemen JV tournament starting at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Dec 20th the Varsity will be in action as they host the Jim Kinyon Tournament with 10 teams coming to town for action that starts at 10 a.m. Be sure to come out and cheer on the wrestlers!
