Special to the Herald

The Roland Park Board held the annual Spring Training 5K Run/Walk in blustery conditions on Saturday morning, April 2. The Roland Kiwanis held a Pancake Feed in conjunction with the event. The start and finish of the race, and the Pancake Feed, were all held at the Roland Middle School. This year there were 91 entrants in the 5K.

The Park Board runs the event to promote health and community involvement in Roland. Funds raised go to youth sports programs in Roland. Prior 5K fundraising went towards the completion of Britson Park in Roland. Britson Park is Roland’s new sports complex on the west side of town. Over 50 combined softball and baseball games are scheduled this spring in the park. Remaining projects in Britson Park include the installation of the flagpole and memorial bricks, and well as putting roofs on the dugouts.

Two Roland-Story High School students took top honors in the Male and Female categories of the 5K race. Dakota Rusher was the first overall finisher with a time of 19:13. Taryn Perry came in first in the Female division, and 13th overall, with a time of 25:23.

Todd Hangen was the second overall male finisher in 19:49, and Gradyn Dowling was the third male finisher in 20:10. The second female finisher was Janean Griffith in 25:28 and the third female finisher was Emma Auld in 25:46. Complete results are posted at cityofroland.org and on the City of Roland Facebook page.
