Norse J.V. girls compete in Ames meet

It was the R-S junior varsity girls’ track team that started off the 2016 spring season, competing for the first time in a meet held in Ames on Monday night (April 4). The R-S Boys and Girls Quadrangular, which was set to open the season on Friday (April 1) was cancelled due to wind and cold conditions.

In the girls’ J.V. competition at Ames, Ann Wilgenbusch took home three third place finishes; one in the 100 meter dash (:14.29), one in the 200 meter dash (:30.46) and another in the 400 meter dash (1:09.60).

Emily Stewart leaped a personal best in the high jump, finishing first by clearing the bar at 4 ft. 10 in. Taryn Johnston alsomanaged a runner-up finish in the 200, edging her teammate Wilgenbusch by just 13/100ths of a second. Taryn’s time was :30.33. She also finished ninth in the 100 (:14.86) and fourth in the 400 (1:10.14).

“All the girls did a great job for their first meet,” said assistant coach Caryn Watson. “We are anxious to see them work toward always improving their personal best each meet.”

Teams competing at the Ames meet alongside the Norsemen were: Ames, Johnston, Waukee, Dowling and Ankeny Centennial.
