Varsity boys’ golf team opens season with victory
The Roland-Story varsity boys opened their 2016 season with a 14-shot victory over Clarion-Goldfield, 169-183, on Monday (April 11) at River Bend Golf Course in Story City. The conditions were on the cold side, with gusty winds, “but compared to what we have had for practice it wasn’t too bad,” said Coach Tyler Frederiksen. “Overall, I was happy with how we played.”
The Norsemen gave a fine effort, with Grant Waline leading the way with medalist honors and a round of 41.
“Grant got off to a tough start with back to back double bogeys to start his round, and was four over through two, but he finished five over for the day,” said Frederiksen. “I was proud of how he responded and turned a tough start into a quality round.”
Runner up medalist Will Larson came in with a 42, winning the card back over his teammate CJ Arnold, who also shot 42.
“I am really happy with Will, who finished as runner up,” continued Coach Frederiksen. “He has put in a lot of extra time and it has really shown so far early in the year. He is a kid that stays after practice and plays holes after I tell the guys they are free to go. Remember, the weather so far has been terrible, but Will is going out and putting in the time, and it’s showing.”
Rounding out the varsity scores were Cole Matheason at 44, Will Halstead in at 46 and Tyler Risdal carded a 49. Branden Boyd and Zach Martin paced Clarion-Goldfield with rounds of 44.
The R-S J.V. team also defeated Clarion-Goldfield by 10, 194-204. The J.V. was led by Dylan Matheason’s 46, followed by Alex Retallick at 47, Ben Carlson had a 50 and Max Halstead shot a round of 51. Carson Ehrenberg and Zach Hartzler rounded out the J.V. squad with scores of 55 and 57, respectively.
