Three run homer in seventh dooms Roland-Story girls
The Norsemen girls led 2-0 after four innings of play, but couldn’t score again as host South Hamilton (15-10) defeated the Norse 5-2 at Jewell Monday night (June 27). The Hawks rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth after the Norsemen had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. South Hamilton would then win it in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out, three-run homer by Alyssa Hegland.
The Norsemen (10-14) scored twice in the third when Jenna Clark singled to left and went to third on Susie Weaver’s bunt single. Susie then promptly stole second and Hailey Lowe walked to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Jenna scored on Sydney Mathis’ sac fly to left. Weaver would also soon score when Juliann Clark reached on an error. Unfortunately, that would be all of the scoring for the Norse.
The Hawks tied the gme at 2-2 in the fifth on a couple of hits and two sacrifice bunts. With one out in the bottom of the seventh Taylor Volkmann and Ady Wintermote both singled, setting the stage for Hegland’s drive over the center field fence to claim the victory for the home team.
Sydney Mathis went the distance on the mound, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, struck out four and walked only one. R-S collected six hits off of pitcher Wintermote - singles by Jenna Clark, Louw, Kelsey Polaski, Jessica Hovick, Brooke Huffaker and Jade Elliott.
“We had a strong start to the game, but we need to continue to work to keep the pressure on offensively after we score early,” said Coach Amber Doyle. “I know we are more than capable of doing that, we just need to showcase confidence in our at bats.”
The Norse and Hawks’ J.V. squads hooked up in a slugfest prior to the varsity game Monday night (June 27) in Jewell, with the home team prevailing 12-8 in five innings. A total of 20 hits were put in the score book; nine by R-S and 11 by South Hamilton.
Cleo Phelps went 3 for 4 for the Norse, with three RBIs. Juliann Clark was on base three times as well; twice by hits and once via base on balls. Lexi Heaberlin also had two hits for the Norsemen, including two RBIs. Jessica Eslick and Sydney Weaver had the other hits.
The Hawks took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the first, but R-S tied it at 5-5 with four of their own in the second. A brief 6-5 lead by the Norse was erased witha four run fourth and a three run fifth, as South Hamilton prevailed by four.
