Royals lose close one to ACA at Meskwaki Invite; C-N drops both matches at Madrid

TAMA — The Colo-NESCO volleyball team came up short in all four of its matches at the Meskwaki Invitational Saturday.

The Royals faced tough competition during the tournament in falling to 0-6 on the season. They were swept by traditional power North Tama (21-7, 21-12), a Belle Plaine team rated eighth in Class 1A (21-8, 21-12) and Denver team rated 11th in 2A that went on to win the tournament (21-5, 21-8).

In its other contest Colo-NESCO fell just short against Ankeny Christian Academy in three sets. The Royals dominated the first set by a 21-11 score, but suffered a 21-18 setback in the second then fell in the rally game by a 15-12 margin.

Izabell Voelker had 15 assists, 17 digs and two kills for Colo-NESCO during the tournament. She also went 24 of 25 serving with three aces.

McKenzie Niemeyer had 17 digs, seven kills and one ace and Megan Hulshizer 23 digs and a perfect 13 of 13 serving effort. Jenna Hill recorded 12 digs, five kills, three blocks and one ace; Ayvarie Bappe 13 digs, five kills, two blocks and one ace, Molly Seyller three digs, Mary Bower two digs; Shelby Perisho one dig and Rebekah Nessa went 1 of 1 on serve attempts.

MADRID — Colo-NESCO lost a tight match with Madrid and also came up short against South Hamilton in a triangular match to open the season Aug. 27.

The Royals fell to Madrid despite a great start. They won the first set, 25-17, but suffered a 25-22 loss in the second then dropped the rally game by a 15-11 margin.

Colo-NESCO averaged seven kills per set with 1.3 percent efficiency. They served at 80-percent efficiency with six aces and had 54 digs and 11 blocks against the Tigers.

Izabell Voelker had 17 digs, 16 assists and three aces for Colo-NESCO against Madrid. Jenna Hill delivered five kills, four blocks and one ace; Ayvarie Bappe eight digs, three kills and one ace; McKenzie Niemeyer 12 digs and four kills; Megan Hulshizer five digs and three kills; Molly Bower three kills and Sophia Pizali two kills.

Colo-NESCO fell to South Hamilton by scores of 25-23 and 25-16. The Royals struggled with their attack against the Hawks, finishing with a minus 3.6-percent kill-efficiency rate.

Hill had three kills, Niemeyer two and Bower one against the Hawks. Voelker handed out four assists and Niemeyer, Hill and Molly Seyller each had an ace.
