West Marshall proves too strong for R-S: Norsemen fall at home, 60-13

Luke Patton was a valuable contributor both at quarterback and receiver during his sophomore season for the Roland-Story football team.

STORY CITY - Roland-Story hung tough early and played well late against West Marshall, but the Norsemen endured a rough stretch over the middle two quarters in suffering a 60-13 loss at home.

Roland-Story held West Marshall scoreless in the first quarter and outscored the Trojans 7-0 in the fourth. But the Norsemen gave up 32 points in the second quarter and 28 more in the third in falling to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in Class 2A District 3.

“I was really happy with how we started the game -  we drove the ball early and traded punches,” Roland-Story head coach Matt Finn said. “We just cannot go flat. We have to learn to compete on every play. We’ve got to find a way to put a whole game together.”

Preston Pope had two touchdown runs and a touchdown reception, Peyton Hart threw for two scores and Grahm Nason busted loose on a 71-yard touchdown run for West Marshall in the second quarter. Roland-Story did manage one touchdown in the second quarter to make the score 20-6 midway through the quarter when Adam McIlrath caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Luke Patton.

In the third quarter Pope and Caden Vellinga had touchdown runs for West Marshall. Pope also returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown and Brayden Evertson ran back a punt 45 yards for a score in the third quarter.

Roland-Story’s final touchdown came on a 28-yard run by Quin Ante in the fourth quarter.

Jimmy Philipsen ran for 54 yards and Patton added 52 passing and 17 rushing for the Norsemen. McIlrath caught three passes for 27 yards.

  On defense Nolan Schnurr and Jackson Sterle each made 4.5 tackles for Roland-Story. Philipsen and Nolan Bell tacked on 3.5 apiece.

Pope ran for 148 yards and added 30 receiving for West Marshall (3-1, 2-0). Hart threw for 128 yards and ran for 38, Evertson made two catches for 61 yards and a touchdown and Nason made one catch for 71 yards.

Evertson led West Marshall on defense with 8.5 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Pope and Hart both intercepted a pass and Koby Evans recovered a fumble.

Up next for Roland-Story is a date with Iowa Falls-Alden (3-1, 2-0). The game will start at 7:30 p.m. in Iowa Falls.
