CLEAR LAKE - Roland-Story’s offense clicked on all cylinders for the first time all season Friday against Clear Lake, but the Norsemen couldn’t overcome mistakes and a balanced Lion attack in a 56-40 loss.

Roland-Story scored more points on Friday than it had over its previous five games thanks to a record-tying passing performance from junior Quin Ante. But the Norse turned the ball over six times and gave up 407 yards in finishing 0-4 in Class 2A District 3 and ending the regular season at 0-6.

“We had some early miscues and got down 21-0 in the first quarter,” Roland-Story head coach Matt Finn said. “Our guys hung tough and won the next three quarters. Our offense moved the ball and our defense made some critical stops, but we just came up short a few times.”

Roland-Story fought back from its early hole to get within 35-18 at the half. Ante threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Adam McIlrath and a 4-yard scoring toss to Jimmy Philipsen and added a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

In the third quarter Clear Lake went up 49-18 after a 22-yard Carson Toebe touchdown run and a blocked punt returned for a score by P.J. Feuerbach. But Roland-Story closed the gab back to 17 points by the end of the quarter after Ante hooked up with McIlrath for touchdown passes of 17 and 15 yards.

Each team added one touchdown in the fourth quarter. Jaden O’Brien-Green went in from one yard out with 5:06 left for Clear Lake and three minutes later Philipsen scored on a 3-yard run for the Norsemen.

“I'm tremendously proud of the resiliency this team has shown,” Finn said. “Everybody who plays on Friday wants to win, but I also know every coach wants to see his team improve and not implode through the season. Our guys have continued to make strides as the season has progressed. They've got nothing to hang their heads about from this game. Plenty to learn from - but nothing to be ashamed of.”

Ante completed 19 of 42 passes for 308 yards with four touchdowns and interceptions apiece. The 308 yards tied the Norsemen record set back in 1985 by Pat Faga.

McIlrath also tied a Roland-Story record with his three touchdown receptions. He finished the game with five catches for 130 yards.

Adam McIlrath made five catches for 130 yards and tied a school record with three touchdown receptions in Roland-Story's 56-40 loss at Clear Lake Friday.

Philipsen ran for 88 yards and caught four passes for 68 yards. Carter Flattebo made eight grabs for 95 yards.

On defense Jackson Sterle recorded 9.5 tackles and Logan Schnurr and Kole Knutson 5.5 apiece. McIlrath chipped in 4.5 stops and Nolan bell 2.5.

Clear Lake improved to 2-5 overall and finished 1-4 in the district. In addition to forcing six turnovers the Lions also had 10 sacks.

Toebe threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 52 yards and two scores. Tyres Green had 105 yards and one touchdown rushing, Andrew Formanek three catches for 91 yards and a score and Eziekel Nelsen one touchdown grab.

Feuerbach had five tackles and two sacks to go along with his blocked punt return for a touchdown for the Lions on defense. Thomas Gansen and Tucker Jones also chipped in two sacks apiece and Andrew Crane intercepted two passes for the Lions.

Roland-Story will face off against Independence (4-1) this Friday in the opening round of 2A playoff competition. The game is at Independence and starts at 7 p.m.
