Fifth-ranked Norsemen down Saydel for second HOIC victory: R-S improves to 8-1 overall

The Roland-Story baseball team received brilliant pitching from Nolan Faber and Alex Berends in a 5-0 victory over Saydel Friday at Story City. 

Faber got the win after giving up three hits and striking out eight with one walk in 4 1/3 innings. Berends allowed just one hit and walk apiece and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings to close things out and help a Norsemen team ranked fifth in Class 2A improve to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. 

Roland-Story scored the game’s first run in the third inning and followed with two runs after each of the next two frames. The Norsemen finished the game with six hits. 

Calvin Carew was 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Ajay Twedt went 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Jackson Anthony went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Steven Berends was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Faber 1-for-4 with a run.

The win was a strong rebound for the Norsemen, who suffered their first loss at the hands of Clear Lake the night before by a 5-4 score at Clear Lake. 

Roland-Story tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the sixth. But Clear Lake came back with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. 

Faber was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Thomas Matthes and Zach Magnuson both singled and scored, Alex Berends went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Twedt 1-for-2 with an RBI, Luke Patton tallied one run and RBI apiece and Anthony also singled. Matthes took the loss after giving up three earned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings. 

The Norsemen swept Forest City in a double header with dominant 10-0 and 13-3 victories June 2 at Forest City. 

In the shutout victory Roland-Story scored eight runs over the first two innings and coasted to victory in five innings. Faber gave up one hit and struck out five with no walks in 3 2/3 innings as the winning pitcher and Twedt threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks allowed. 

Carew went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and RBIs, Patton singled and drove in two runs and Faber finished 2-for-2 with a double and two runs on offense on the opener. 

In the nightcap Roland-Story scored four runs in the third inning to go up 5-0 and never look back in picking up the win in six innings. Faber was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Jackson 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Matthes 2-for-4 with runs and an RBI and Alex Berends 1-for-2 with two RBIs to pace a 13-hit attack by the Norsemen. 

Alex Berends got the win after throwing three scoreless innings and giving up just one hit with four strikeouts. Twedt gave up three unearned runs on two hits and walks apiece with five strikeouts in three innings. 

Roland-Story opened the week with a 12-2 victory over Perry in five innings at Story City. The Norsemen jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings then plated four runs in the third to put the game away. 

Patton was the winning pitcher after striking out four and giving up one hit and walk apiece in 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Brett Schmitz gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings and Hesston Johnson struck out two and allowed just one hit in one scoreless inning of work. 

Faber was 2-for-2 with a home run and two runs and RBIs apiece, Matthes 3-for-3 with a double, run and two RBIs, Steven Berends 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Patton and Matthew Phalen each collected one hit, run and RBI apiece against Perry.
