Roland-Story softball team goes 2-1 at OABCIG Invitational: No. 11 Norse get HOIC win over Hawks
The Roland-Story softball team went 2-1 at the Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove Invitational last Friday and Saturday to concluded a busy seven-game stretch from June 7-12.
The Norse, ranked 11th in Class 3A, went to 10-3 overall on the season after defeating Maple Valley-Anthon Oto and East Sac County and falling to a Newell-Fonda team ranked No. 1 in 1A.
Roland-Story blanked MVAO by a 5-0 score Friday to open the tournament. Madison Geise gave up three hits and struck out three with one walk in five innings as the winning pitcher and Dana Vinson threw two scoreless and hitless innings with one strikeout and walk apiece.
Vinson also hit a solo home run, Reagan Faber was 3-for-3 with one run, steal and RBI apiece, Hayden Walters 2-for-4 with a triple and a run, Macy Friest 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Geise 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Saturday saw Roland-Story defeat East Sac County by a 9-5 score. The Norsemen suffered a 7-3 loss to Newell Fonda.
Walters doubled and drove in a run against Newell Fonda. Friest singled and drove in a run, Ally Ringsby singled and scored and Faber and Reagan Schmitz each scored a run.
Geise took the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Vinson surrendered one run on one hit with one walk and strikeout apiece in 2 1/3 innings.
Statistics were not available for the East Sac County game.
Roland-Story pounded BCLUW by a 13-2 score in six innings June 10 at Conrad. Friest went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Walters 1-for-1 with three RBIs, Faber 3-for-4 with a steal and two runs and RBIs apiece, Ringsby 3-for-5 with a run, steal and two RBIs and Lydia Oetker 1-for-2 with a double and two runs.
Vison was 2-for-4 with a run and Kayley Birkland 2-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece. Geise got the win after allowing two unearned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in five innings and Vinson tossed one scoreless inning.
Roland-Story suffered its first Heart of Iowa Conference loss of the season June 9 at Monroe. The Norse were dealt a 10-5 loss by Prairie City-Monroe to drop to 4-1 in the conference.
Alynn Solberg was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Faber 2-for-4 with a run, Friest 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Vinson 1-for-3 with a double and a run and Schmitz 1-for-3. Geise took the loss after giving up 10 runs — just two earned — on five hits and two walks in five innings and Vinson allowed one hit and two walks in one scoreless inning.
The Norse handed East Marshall a 10-2 loss June 8 at Roland. They jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and coasted to victory.
Friest went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and RBIs apiece, Faber 2-for-2 with three runs and steals apiece, Vinson 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Geise 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs against the Mustangs. Solberg ended up 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Ringsby 1-for-4 with a run and Schmitz 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Geise surrendered one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks in four innings as the winning pitcher versus East Marshall. Vinson allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout in three innings.
Roland-Story opened the week with 14-4 HOIC victory over South Hamilton June 7 at Roland. The Norse built a 7-4 lead then scored twice in the bottom of the third inning, two more times in the fourth and three in the fifth to end the game early.
Vinson went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs and RBIs apiece against the Hawks. Friest 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, Walters 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBIs, Ringsby 2-for-3 with two runs, Schmitz 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Solberg 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Faber 1-for-1 with three runs and steals apiece.
Geise surrendered four unearned runs on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings to earn the win against South Hamilton. Vinson gave up one hit and two walks with one strikeout in in 1/3 of an inning.
