Fourth-ranked Roland-Story baseball team blanks IFA, goes 1-1 at Diamond Dreams Tournament

Alex Berends struck out 14 batters in six innings as the winning pitcher for Roland-Story in a 12-0 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden Friday at Iowa Falls.

The Roland-Story baseball team blanked Iowa Falls-Alden Friday and took second at the Diamond Dreams Tournament in Waterloo June 16. 

The Norsemen, ranked fourth in Class 2A, defeated Iowa Falls-Alden by a 12-0 score at Iowa Falls. They built a 6-0 lead over the first six innings then iced the game with a six-run seventh inning to improve to 16-4 on the season. 

Alex Berends was the winning pitcher in a dominant performance. Berends struck out 14 batters and only gave up five hits in six shutout innings. 

Ajay Twedt threw a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout. 

Zach Magnuson doubled, walked twice and produced three runs and RBIs apiece and Nolan Faber doubled, tripled, walked twice and picked up two runs and RBIs apiece for Roland-Story on offense. Jackson Anthony went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Twedt ended up 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and Steven Berends was 2-for-3 with three runs.

At the Diamond Dreams Tournament Roland-Story scored a 3-0 victory over West Delaware and suffered a 5-4 loss at the hands of Center Point-Urbana at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.  

Faber picked up the win over West Delaware. He went all seven innings and fired a one hitter with six strikeouts and one walk. 

Roland-Story scored all three of its runs in the second inning. Magnuson singled and scored, Twedt walked and scored, Steven Berends delivered one run and RBI apiece and Thomas Matthes and Calvin Carew each chipped in one hit. 

The Norsemen fell to Center Point-Urbana in 10 innings. They rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the score in the seventh inning and add a run in the 10th, only to see CPU score twice in the 10th to claim the victory. 

Ben Greenfield took the loss in relief after giving up two earned runs on two hits and four walks with one strikeout in four innings of relief. Matthes gave up three earned runs on six hits and finished with four strikeouts in five innings as the starter. 

Carew went 2-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs, Twedt ended up 1-for-4 with one run and two RBIs apiece, Matthes singled and scored and Magnuson and Matthew Phelan each drove in a run against CPU. Faber went 2-for-4 and Alex Berends also singled for Roland-Story.   

Roland-Story swept Lenox by scores of 7-4 and 10-2 at a non-conference home doubleheader June 15 in Story City. 

In the first game Twedt gave up one hit and struck out three in 1 1/3 innings as the winning pitcher in relief. Luke Patton allowed two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. 

Faber went 2-for-2 with three runs, one double and an RBI, Phelan singled and scored and Anthony went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  

The nightcap saw Roland-Story take advantage of a six-run fifth inning.  

Hesston Johnson gave up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts in three innings as the winning pitcher. Twedt threw four scoreless innings and gave up just one hit with eight strikeouts. 

Carew went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and two RBIs, Twedt finished 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece and Magnuson drove in two runs. Matthes and Phelan both scored and drove in a run and Jackson and Alex Berends each recorded one hit. 

Roland-Story opened the week with a 15-6 victory at Greene County June 14. The victory put the Norsemen at 4-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. 

Roland-Story jumped out to an 8-0 lead and withstood a five-run Greene County fourth inning by scoring six runs apiece over the sixth and seventh frames. 

Faber went 2-for-5 with four runs and three RBIs and Anthony 2-for-4 with one run and RBIs against the Rams. Steven Berends ended up 2-for-3 with four runs and an RBI, Magnuson finished 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs, Pehlan doubled and scored three times and Matthes and Alex Berends both doubled once. 

Alex Berends surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in five innings as the victorious pitcher versus Greene County. Matthes threw two scoreless innings and struck out four with one walk.
