Norse softball team falls to No. 3 Raiders in 3A regional finals: R-S finishes with 24-9 record
WILLIAMSBURG — The No. 13 Roland-Story softball team put up a great fight against No. 3 Williamsburg in the Class 3A regional finals July 12, but the Norse ran out of gas in the sixth inning, falling by a 5-1 score.
Roland-Story fell behind 2-0, but pulled within one run in the top of the fourth when Macy Friest singled in Reagan Faber. The Norse kept within 2-1 heading into the the sixth, but they gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning and couldn't respond in finishing the season with a 24-9 record.
The Norse fell despite strong pitching from Madison Geise. Geise gave up three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings.
Dana Vinson also threw for Roland-Story. Vinson allowed one run on two hits and one walk.
The Roland-Story pitchers were hurt by four Norse errors on defense.
Friest's single was the only hit of the game for Roland-Story off Williamsburg ace Peyton Driscoll, who finished with 13 strikeouts and four walks. Faber walked once and stole a base in addition to her run, Alynn Solberg walked twice and Hayden Walters also drew a free pass.
Elle Ridgway went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Rylee Vercande was 2-for-3 with a run for Williamsburg at the plate. The Raiders improved to 31-10 heading into the state tournament.
