Roland-Story's potent passing attack couldn't overcome Iowa Falls-Alden's powerful ground game in a 46-28 loss to the Cadets Friday at Story City.

The Norsemen suffered their first Class 2A District 7 loss in falling to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in the district.

Roland-Story had over 350 yards through the air. But the Norsemen couldn't overcome Iowa Falls-Alden's 412 rushing yards.

Roland-Story was also hurt by five turnovers.

"We pulled out all the stops on both sides of the ball and when a game is being called like that you're more prone to mistakes," Roland-Story head coach Matt Finn said. "Our staff knew that going in, but we insisted on attacking the entire game. Iowa Falls-Alden did a nice job of capitalizing on our mistakes and their ground game was strong."

Here is what we learned from Roland-Story's loss:

Norsemen never give up

Iowa Falls-Alden jumped all over Roland-Story in the first half. The Cadets led 36-14 at the break.

Roland-Story's Logan Schnurr brings down Iowa Falls-Alden's Jaden Damiano during the Norsemen's 46-28 loss to the Cadets Friday in Story City.

But Roland-Story refused to throw in the towel in the second half. The Norsemen outscored the Cadets 14-10 over the final two quarters.

"We talked this week about increasing our competitive stamina and staying locked in and competing for the duration of the game with no let downs," Finn said. "Our guys really brought effort for the entirety of the game. I'm proud of that."

Passing game still going strong

Roland-Story quarterback Quin Ante topped 300 yards passing for the second time and 200 yards for the fourth time this season Friday. Ante was 26 of 39 for 336 yards and three touchdowns.

Will Bunn topped 100 yards receiving for the fourth time this season. Bunn made seven catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns and he also completed one pass for 23 yards.

Carter Flattebo tacked on seven catches for 62 yards and Kale Lande six for 46. Gavin Carpenter chipped in a 26-yard touchdown catch, Isaiah Naylor added a 21-yard grab and Luke Patton and Jonovan Wilkinson combined to catch five balls for 76 yards.

Running game takes a step back

The Roland-Story rushing attack made promising strides against Chariton a week ago when Nick Butler ran for 122 yards.

The Norsemen were kept in check by IFA. They only had 38 yards rushing as a team, with Wilkinson leading the way by rushing for 23 yards on four carries.

No answers for Cadet rushing trio

Roland-Story couldn't stop Iowa Falls-Alden's three-headed monster of Jaden Damiano, Kacen Boyer and Gabe Hadwiger.

Damiano ran for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Boyer racked up 146 yards and two scores on 17 rushes and Hadwiger ran the ball 18 times for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Carpenter made 7.5 tackles, Logan Schnurr seven and Christian Eslick and Tyler Isebrands 6.5 apiece for Roland-Story.

Big challenge this week

Roland-Story faces the 2A District 7 favorite this week in third-ranked West Marshall at State Center. The Trojans are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the district.
