Norsemen second at Dennis Field Invite: What we learned from R-S wrestling team's opening week

Roland-Story's Kade Blume, ranked first at 106 pounds in Class 2A to open the season, took first at 113 during the Dennis Field Invitational in Bondurant Saturday. Blume also went 2-0 in the team's opening double-dual with Bondurant-Farrar and Gilbert Dec. 2.

The Roland-Story wrestling team opened the season last week by splitting a double-dual with Gilbert and Bondurant-Farrar Dec. 2 at Gilbert and taking second at the Dennis Field Invitational in Woodward Saturday.

The Norsemen defeated Gilbert by a 57-20 score and suffered a 55-23 loss to Bondurant-Farrar. They won eight matches by fall and one by decision against Gilbert and picked up three pins and one victory by technical fall against Bondurant-Farrar.

At the Dennis Field Invitational they scored 172 points to trail only Woodward-Granger's 204.5 points among 10 competing schools. Roland-Story crowned five champions at the tournament. 

Here is what we learned from Roland-Story's opening week:

Veterans dominate at Field Invite

Roland-Story returns state champion Kade Blume (106 pounds) and eighth-place finisher Christian Eslick (145). They also bring back talented veterans Logan Powers (138), Hesston Johnson (160), Jaxson Kadolph (195), Noah Wakefield (120), Eli Thorson (182), Levi Webb (106) and Colin Hansen (285).

Blume, Eslick, Powers, Johnson and Kadolph each won a championship at the Dennis Field Invite. Blume wrestled at 113 and Eslick at 152.

Blume pinned Des Monies North-Hoover's Addi Adango and won by tech fall (19-3) over Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas' Kael Ciakowski. Eslick pinned Woodward-Granger's Brayden Simons, North-Hoover's Cody Jackson, Saydel's Austin Chally, SEW/M-D's Cole Metz and Martensdale St. Marys' Johnnie Cassady.

Powers pinned SEW/M-D's Robert Beardsley, Woodward-Granger's Tjaden Smeltzer, MSM's Conor Cassady and North-Hoover's Rolando Santana-Salgado. He also scored a 1-0 victory over Saydel's Kolton Keller.

Johnson pinned North-Hoover's Jake Rattray, scored a 17-2 tech fall over MSM's Sampson Henson and earned a 3-2 decision of Woodward-Granger's Dustin Harney. Kadolph pinned Woodward-Granger's Bryce Hockenson, Coon Rapids-Bayard's Jacob Meshek and Collins-Maxwell's Marshall Day and added an 8-0 major decision over North-Hoover's Kaiden Feldman.

Roland-Story's Colin Hansen scores a fall over Gilbert's Nicolas Romero at 285 pounds during the double-dual meet at Gilbert Dec. 2.

Wakefield (120) and Thorson (182) both placed second at Woodward. Wakefield went 4-1 with three pins and one win by decision and Thorson was 3-1 with all three victories coming by fall and his lone loss a 3-2 decision to 2021 state place-winner Brody Sampson of Collins-Maxwell.

Webb took third at 106 with one pin. Hanson was fourth at 285 with two falls.

Three Norse go 2-0 at double-dual

Blume, Eslick and Johnson won both of their matches at the Gilbert double-dual to open the season.

Blume wrestled at 106 against Bondurant-Farrar's Reid Foster and won by tech fall (22-6). He went up to 113 against Gilbert's John Artz and scored a fall in 1:47.

Eslick pinned Bondurant-Farrar's Caleb Kramer in 46 seconds and Gilbert's Eli Branson in 3:40 at 152. Johnson competed at 160 and stuck Bondurant-Farrar's Trent Paxton in 47 seconds and earned an 8-5 win over Gilbert's Hank Johnson.

Six other Norse get pins against Gilbert

Powers (138), Kadolph (195), Hansen (285), Webb (106), Colin Streit (126) and Isaac Hall (132) each won by fall against Gilbert. Powers pinned the Tigers' Charlie Schreck in 1:52, Kadolph took care of Levi Lewis in 4:49, Hansen downed Nicolas Romero in 47 seconds, Webb defeated Dennis May in 51 seconds, Streit toppled Braeden Nees in 2:49 and Hall stuck Holt Bellon in 2:39.

Wakefield added a forfeit win against Gilbert. 

Roland Yates also picked up a win during the evening for Roland-Story. Yates wrestled at 220 and defeated Bondurant-Farrar's Quinten Fulton by fall in 40 seconds.
