Here are the 21 top Ames-area high school sports performers for May 23-29

The Gilbert boys golf team repeated as Class 3A state champions and the Tiger girls team took second at state in 3A this past week.

Roland-Story also turned in its second-straight top-five finish at state in 2A girls golf and two Ames girls golfers placed in the top 50 of 4A state competition.

The Gilbert and Nevada boys soccer teams are both headed to state after winning their substate final matches. Nevada is state bound in girls soccer for the 10th year in a row after defeating Pella Christian in the 1A regional finals last Thursday.

The Ames softball team started off its season 2-1 with victories over Roland-Story and Bettendorf. Roland-Story swept Nevada in a baseball doubleheader, the Gilbert softball team started off 3-1, the Tiger baseball team picked up two wins and the Ballard and Collins-Maxwell softball teams both won their first two games.

Here are the top Ames Tribune-area individual performers for the week:

Spencer Clatt (center).

Spencer Clatt

Clatt led the Gilbert boys to its repeat state championship by placing fourth individually during the 3A boys state golf meet May 23-24 at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

Clatt shot to 18-hole rounds of 77 to finish with a 154 over the two days. He tied Knoxville's Evan Smith for fourth individually to help Gilbert shoot a 633 as a team over 36 holes to claim the team championship by 21 strokes and cap an amazing senior year.

Sawyer Hansen

Hansen also stepped up big in the final golf meet of his career for Gilbert at state.

Hansen carded a 157 at state with 18-hole rounds of 75 and 82 to place sixth individually and help the Tigers bring home the team title.

Joey Currans

Currans also played a big role in Gilbert repeating as state champions in boys golf.

Currans gave Gilbert a third medalist by tying for seventh individually. He shot a 160 with identical rounds of 80 over the two days.

Eden Lohrbach

Eden Lohrbach

The Gilbert sophomore followed up last year's 3A state individual title with a runner-up performance at this year's girls state golf meet held last Thursday and Friday at the River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

Lohrbach shot a 149 with rounds of 75 and 74 to tie Newton's Rylee Heryford for first. Heryford won a three-hole playoff for the individual championship.

Lohrbach's effort helped Gilbert shoot a 716 as a team. The Tigers took second in the 3A team standings for the second year in a row, losing by just three strokes to Clear Lake.

Olivia Axmear

The Nevada sophomore had a very strong showing in her first individual appearance at the 3A girls state golf meet.

Axmear shot a 175 in Adel to tie for 14th place. She turned in rounds of 89 and 86.

Makenna Carlson

The Roland-Story sophomore led the Norse girls golf team to a team score of 747 and a fourth-place finish at the 2A girls state golf meet held at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Carlson medaled by placing fourth with a score of 161. She shot an 80 on Thursday and 81 Friday.

Ellie Erickson

Erickson capped her golfing career at Roland-Story with a top-10 individual finish at the 2A girls state golf meet.

Erickson came in ninth with a 167 after turning rounds of 82 and 85 to help Roland-Story place in the top five as a team for the second year in a row.

Matthew Weber

Matthew Weber

Weber played a huge role in Gilbert's 2-1 shootout victory over Cedar Rapids Xavier in the 2A substate boys soccer final May 25 at Tiger Stadium in Gilbert.

Weber came in at keeper for the shootout and made a clutch save. Xavier also missed the next shot to help the Tigers win the shootout and punch their tickets to state with a 16-2 record.

Evan Weary

Weary also came up big in Gilbert's shootout victory over Xavier in the substate finals.

Weary converted the final PK in the shootout to clinch the victory for Gilbert. He also assisted a Tad Hatfield goal in the second half of the lone Tiger goal in regulation.

Drew Robinson

Robinson scored 2 goals and added an assist for the Nevada boys soccer team in a 3-0 victory over Des Moines Christian in the 1A substate finals of boys soccer May 25 at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

The victory sent Nevada (15-6) to the state tournament for the first time since 2018.

Edgar Cabrera

Cabrera also turned in a big game against Des Moines Christian to help the Nevada boys soccer team return to state.

Cabrera finished the game with 1 goal and 2 assists.

Isabelle Nelson

Nevada sophomore Isabelle Nelson came up huge against Pella Christian in the 1A regional finals for the Cub girls soccer team.

Nelson scored the game's first goal and she later dished out an assist in a 4-0 victory that sent the Cub girls to state for the 10th year in a row.

The Nevada senior is headed to the girls state soccer tournament for the third time in as many attempts.

The Cub midfielder scored 2 goals in Nevada's 4-0 victory over Pella Christian in the 1A regional finals May 26 at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

Ellie Lynch

The Ames sophomore had a big opening week for the Little Cyclone softball team.

Lynch went 5-for-9 with 2 doubles, 1 home run, 4 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 steals over the Little Cyclones' first three games. Ames defeated Bettendorf (8-6), lost to Des Moines Lincoln (9-5) and knocked off Roland-Story (9-3).

Olivia Smalley

Smalley was also 5-for-9 during the first week for the Ames softball team.

Smalley hit 1 double and accounted for 3 runs and RBIs apiece.

Mia Vogel

The Ames junior went 4-for-9 during the opening week of softball.

Vogel doubled twice, scored once and drove in 2 runs.

Alexis Houge

The Collins-Maxwell senior turned in a strong opening game for a Spartan softball team ranked No. 5 in 1A.

Houge was 3-for-4 with a run and 2 steals at the plate and she made a putout in both of her fielding chances at shortstop to help the Spartans score a 3-0 victory over Roland-Story in 10 innings May 23 at Collins.

Erica Houge

The younger Houge was also fantastic during the opening game for the Collins-Maxwell softball team.

Houge, a sophomore, threw a 2-hitter with 16 strikeouts and 3 walks going all 10 innings in the victory over Roland-Story. She also hit a walk-off three-run homer in the 10th inning to win the game.

Taylor Sniezek

The Gilbert senior picked up a win on the mound during the Tigers' 6-3 victory over Carroll to open the softball season May 23 at Carroll.

Sniezek gave up 3 runs on 6 hits with 8 strikeouts and just 1 walk going all seven innings.

Andrew Grover

Grover went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs for the Colo-NESCO baseball team in a 6-4 victory over Collins-Maxwell Friday at Collins.

Grover also singled, walked and scored in a 5-3 loss at Madrid May 26.

Elizabeth Duncan

The Ames freshman had strong showing during her first state golf meet.

Duncan placed 21st at the 4A state meet held at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny Thursday and Friday. She finished with a score of 170 over 36 holes after turning an 85 each day.
