Norse girls golf team places fifth at 2A state meet: R-S baseball team sweeps Nevada

The Roland-Story girls golf team turned in its second top-five finish at state in Class 2A last week.

The Norse girls placed fifth at the 2A girls state golf meet held at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls last Thursday and Friday. They followed up last year's runner-up performance at the 2A state meet in Marshalltown with another outstanding effort in 2022.

Roland-Story shot a 747 as a team over 36 holes. The Norse carded a 368 over 18 holes Thursday and a 379 Friday, finishing 10 strokes out of fourth place.

Sumner-Fredericksburg won the 2A team championship with a score of 703. New Hampton took second with a 712, Dike-New Hartford third with a 730 and Williamsburg fourth out of 10 teams with a 737.

Sophomore Makenna Carlson medaled individually and senior Ellie Erickson capped an outstanding final year golfing for the Norse with a top-10 finish.

Carlson carded a 161 to place fourth individually. Sumner-Fredericksburg's Chloe Bolte won a playoff with Columbus Catholic's Molly Fereday for 2A medalist honors after they each shot a 149 and Mediapolis' Olivia Hines shot a 153 to take third as the only golfers to top Carlson.

Carlson shot an 80 Thursday and an 81 Friday. She shot par on nine holes and birdied one during Thursday's competition then hit par on seven holes with two birdies Friday.

Erickson finished with a 167. She recorded an 82 Thursday and an 85 Friday.

Erickson shot par on seven holes and had one birdie Thursday and six pars and a birdie Friday.

Gabriella Wakefield finished in a three-way tie for 48th place individually for Roland-Story. Wakefield shot a 208 with rounds of 103 and 105.

Abby Cook also scored for the Norse. Cook finished with a 211 with rounds of 103 and 108 to tie for 53rd place.

Courtney Schaiver and Mersadie Franklin both turned in counted scores during Friday's competition. Schaiver shot a 111 and Franklin a 114.

Norsmen baseball team sweeps Nevada

The Roland-Story baseball team opened Heart of Iowa Conference play by sweeping Nevada May 27 at Norsemen Field in Story City.

Roland-Story won the first game by a 7-1 score and took the nightcap by a 13-3 margin in six innings to improve to 3-3 overall.

In the opener Roland-Story jumped out to a 4-0 lead then plated three runs in the sixth inning to secure the win. Tossed a four-hitter with 5 strikeouts and no walks going all 7 innings to get the win and Brett Schmitz was 3-for-4 with a double, run and 2 RBIs for the Norse in the win.

Matthew Phelan was 2-for-4 with 2 runs and Jackson Anthony 2-for-3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs for Roland-Story in the opener.

In the nightcap Schmitz was 2-for-2 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs and Anthony, Thomas Matthes, Alex Berends and Cooper Loof each drove in 1 run. Matthes hit a triple and Carter Loof doubled and scored twice.

Matthes got the win on the mound in the second game after allowing 2 unearned runs on 1 hit with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Roland-Story suffered a 4-0 non-conference loss to defending 2A state champion Van Meter May 23 at Van Meter.

A single by Schmitz was the only Norsemen hit off Van Meter pitchers Gannon Archer and Chris Schreck. Berends took the loss after giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in 4 innings.

Norse softball team off to slow start

The Roland-Story softball team started the season 0-3 with losses to 1A power Collins-Maxwell, an Ames team ranked 15th in 5A and Nevada.

The Norse fell to Collins-Maxwell by a 3-0 score on a walk-off homer from Erica Houge in the 10th inning May 23 at Collins. Houge also held the Norse to 2 hits and struck out 16 batters as the winning pitcher.

Macy Friest doubled and Lydia Oetker singled for the only Norse hits off Houge. Madison Geise was the losing pitcher despite a brilliant 15-strikeout performance on the mound as she gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 3 walks in 9 innings.

Roland-Story was dealt a 9-3 setback by Ames May 26 at Roland. The Norse took an early 1-0 lead then gave up 8 runs over the next three innings and couldn't recover.

Friest went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Reagan Faber was 2-for-2 with a run, Geise singled and drove in a run and Ally Ringsby singled, scored and stole 2 bases for Roland-Story in the loss. Geise again took the loss on the mound after allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits and 4 walks with 4 strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Addy Sabatino surrendered 1 run on 3 hits with 1 strikeout in 3 1/3 innings of relief against Ames.

The Norse suffered a 7-4 loss at the hands of Nevada Friday at Roland. They fell behind 5-0 after 4 innings and couldn't make up the difference.

Lexi Vaughn was 3-for-3 with a double and 2 runs, Faber went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Alyssa Jones singled and scored, Geise doubled and Friest singled against the Cubs.  Geise took the loss after giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings and Jones allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
