Story City Herald sports round-up: Roland-Story baseball team sweeps two doubleheaders

The Roland-Story baseball team racked up a pair of doubleheader sweeps and the Norse softball team knocked off Ballard, Nevada and Greene County last week.

The Norse baseball team scored 5-2 and 13-10 victories over Lenox June 13 at Lenox. They picked up a pair of shutouts against Greene County June 16 at Jefferson, winning by scores of 9-0 and 5-0 to improve to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The Roland-Story softball team outlasted Ballard in a 9-7 battle at Huxley June 14. The Norse edged Greene County by a 4-2 decision June 13 at Roland and they hammered Nevada by a 13-3 score June 15 Nevada to improve to 6-2 in the HOIC and 10-5 overall.

Norse softball team earns two HOIC wins

Pitching and defense helped Roland-Story past Greene County. The Norse flexed their offensive muscle in the victories over Ballard and Nevada.

Madison Geise gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings as the winning pitcher against Greene County. Alyssa Jones threw a scoreless and hitless inning for Roland-Story in the seventh inning.

Reagan Faber and Ally Ringsby picked up one double, run, walk and RBI apiece and Lydia Oetker was 1-for-2 with an RBI against Greene County. Kayley Birkland and Alynn Solberg both singled and scored and Geise and Hayden Walters each added one hit.

In the win over Ballard Geise hit a grand slam and Walters was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Solberg went 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI, Faber doubled and scored, Ringsby singled and scored twice, Birkland finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, Oetker singled and scored and Macy Friest picked up a hit.

Adison Sabatino was the winning pitcher against Ballard after allowing four earned runs on five hits and four walks with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings. Geise surrendered two runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Roland-Story used a six-run second inning to build an early 7-1 lead and coast to victory against Nevada.

Geise and Birkland both homered versus the Cubs. Geise went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Birkland was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

Faber doubled twice and picked up two runs and RBIs apiece and Walters ended up 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI against Nevada. Oetker finished 2-for-3 with two runs, Ringsby was 1-for-1 with two runs and RBIs apiece.

Jones was the winning pitcher after allowing one run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Geise gave up two unearned runs on one hit with seven strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Thomas Matthes shines for Norsemen on the baseball diamond

Matthes had a huge week for the Roland-Story baseball team.

In the doubleheader with Lenox Matthes was 3-for-4 with two doubles, one home run, two runs and three RBIs in the 5-2 victory and 2-for-5 with another double and home run plus two runs and three RBIs in the 13-10 victory. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the 9-0 win over Greene County and was the winning pitcher in the 5-0 victory, striking out nine batters and giving up just two hits and walks apiece in 5 2/3 innings.

Matthes also got the win in the first game against Lenox, surrendering one earned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in four innings.

Ben Greenfield threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in the 5-0 over Greene County. Alex Berends tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks in the opening game against the Rams.

Matthew Phelan was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs and RBIs apiece in the opener against Greene County. He went 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece in the second game.

Phelan was also 1-for-2 with two runs in the opener and 3-for-3 with a double and four runs and RBIs apiece in the nightcap against Lenox.

Brett Schmitz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Cooper Loof 2-for-3 with a double and three runs and Carter Loof 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI in the second game against Lenox. Greenfield was the winning pitcher after giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

In the first game against Lenox Jackson Anthony singled and drove in a run.
