The Ames softball team advanced to the Class 5A regional championship round with a 6-1 victory over Sioux City East in the semifinals Saturday.
The Ames baseball team saw its season come to a close Friday with a 5-2 loss to Mason City in the 4A substate quarterfinals. The Little Cyclones finished 18-20-1.
The Gilbert baseball team reached Monday's 3A substate semifinals with a 5-3 victory over Humboldt in the quarterfinals Friday. The Tiger softball team pounded Webster City (15-3) in the 4A regional quarterfinals Friday and gave fifth-ranked Carlisle all it could handle in the semifinals before falling by a 4-3 score to finish 14-16.
Ballard (19-10) advanced to the 3A baseball substate semifinals with an 11-1 win over Boone in the quarterfinals Friday. The Bomber softball team will take a 15-20 record into the 3A regional finals against No. 4 West Liberty after blanking Des Moines Christian (10-0) and No. 9 Roland-Story (8-0) in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively.
The Roland-Story softball team finished 20-10 after defeating Nevada (10-0) in the regional quarterfinals then falling to Ballard. the Norsemen baseball team ended with a 19-7 record after suffering a 6-1 loss to Grundy Center in the 2A district semifinals July 5.
The Nevada baseball team ended its season at 13-17 with a 5-2 loss to No. 9 Independence in the 3A substate quarterfinals Saturday. The Cub softball team finished 7-19 with its loss to Roland-Story.
The No. 4 Collins-Maxwell softball team advanced to Monday's 1A regional finals with a 23-2 record after an 8-0 victory over Colo-NESCO July 6 and a 2-0 triumph over North Butler July 8. Colo-NESCO ended its season at 8-21 with the loss to the Spartans.

Lynch was 2-for-2 with a double, home run and two walks for the Ames softball team in a 6-1 victory over Sioux City East during the Class 5A regional semifinals Saturday in Ames.
Lynch also doubled and drove in a run during the Little Cyclones' 6-2 loss to No. 1 Waukee Northwest to close out the regular season July 5.
Kopaska fired a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Ames softball team during its regional win over Sioux City East.
Kopaska shutout the Black Raiders over the final six innings after giving up a run in the first.
Buss walked twice and hit a home run for the Ames softball team during its victory over Sioux City East.
The home run was Buss' 12th of the season as she continues to build on her school record for homers in a season and career.
Geffre went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Ames baseball team in a 6-2 loss to Waukee Northwest to close out the regular season July 5.
Geffre was also 2-for-4 with a double and a run during the Little Cyclones' 5-2 4A substate quarterfinal loss to Mason City Friday in Ames.
The Ames senior homered in the final at-bat of his career during the Little Cyclones' substate loss to Mason City.
Eldred went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI for the Gilbert baseball team during a 5-3 victory over Humboldt in the 3A substate quarterfinals Friday.
Eldred was also the winning pitcher, giving up one earned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks in 6 1/3 innings.
Konz was 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece for the Gilbert baseball team during its victory over Humboldt.
Latterell was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for the Gilbert softball team in a 15-3 victory over Webster City during the 4A regional quarterfinals Friday.
Latterell also doubled and drove in two runs during a 4-3 loss to No. 5 Carlisle in the regional semifinals Saturday at Carlisle.
Schwartze was 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs and RBIs apiece for the Gilbert softball team during its victory over Webster City.
In the loss to Carlisle Schwartze walked once and scored a run.
Nelson homered, scored three times and drove in two runs for the Gilbert softball team against Webster City.
She also was 2-for-4 with a double and a run in the loss to Carlisle.
Rouse fired a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Ballard baseball team in an 11-1 victory over Boone during the 3A substate quarterfinals Friday at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.
Rouse was also 2-for-5 with a double, run and RBI at the plate.
The Ballard sophomore went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI during the Bombers' victory over Boone.
Baumgardner fired a two-hit shutout for the Ballard softball team during a 10-0 victory over Des Moines Christian in the 3A regional quarterfinals July 6.
Baumgardner struck out six batters and didn't issue a single walk during the victory. She also tossed a four-hitter with three strikeouts in an 8-0 shutout victory over No. 9 Roland-Story during the regional semifinals Saturday in Roland.
Larson had her best game of the season for the Ballard softball team against Des Moines Christian.
Larson homered twice and drove in five runs during the Bomber rout. She added a 2-for-4 performance with one run in the victory over Roland-Story.
Hobbs drove in four runs during Ballard's victory over Roland-Story in the regional semifinals.
She also walked and scored twice during the victory over DMC.
Faber went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI for the Roland-Story softball team during its 10-0 victory over Nevada in the 3A regional quarterfinals July 6 at Roland.
Faber was also 3-for-4 in the loss to Ballard.
Geise fired a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk and she also singled and drove in two runs for Roland-Story during its victory over Nevada.
Franzen was 3-for-3 with a run and a steal and he gave up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts for the Nevada baseball team in a 10-2 loss to Boone to close out the regular season July 6.
Franzen also allowed one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts in two innings in a 5-2 loss to No. 9 Independence during the 3A substate quarterfinals Saturday. He added a walk and a run against the Mustangs.
Houge fired a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk and she also drove in a run for the Collins-Maxwell softball team in its 2-0 regional semifinal victory over North Butler Friday.
Houge also tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and drove in two runs in the 8-0 regional quarterfinal win over Colo-NESCO July 6.
Alexis doubled twice, scored two times and picked up one RBI and steal apiece for Collins-Maxwell in the victory over Colo-NESCO.
She also tripled and scored a run in the victory over North Butler.
Wierson went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Collins-Maxwell in its victory over Colo-NESCO.
She also singled and drove in a run against North Butler.
