R-S boys give No. 8 SH a good run

JEWELL — The Roland-Story boys’ basketball team put up a good fight against No. 8 (Class 2A) South Hamilton before coming up short by a 47-38 score Friday at Jewell.

The Norsemen outscored the Hawks 30-25 over the final two quarters to make them sweat it out. Roland-Story just couldn’t overcome a slow offensive start that resulted in just eight points in the first half, falling to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Roland-Story held South Hamilton without a 3-pointer and did a solid job taking care of the ball. But the Norsemen only attempted four free throws, making just one, compared to South Hamilton’s 15 of 25 showing from the line.

Carter Greenfield recorded 11 points and eight rebounds and Sam Skaar and Dylan Ihle netted eight points apiece for Roland-Story.

South Hamilton improved to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the HOIC. Conner Hill had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead the Hawks, and Cole Berg and Cade Balvanz chipped in 12 and 10 points respectively.

ANKENY — Roland-Story couldn’t find enough punch on offense to keep pace with Grand View Christian in a 64-41 loss to the Thunder Jan. 8 at Faith Baptist Bible College.

The Norsemen only shot 32 percent from the field and got to the line only six times. They were also outrebounded, 34-24, falling to 5-6 on the season.

Grand View Christian led 38-26 at the half. The Thunder held Roland-Story to 15 points in the second half to sew up the win.

Carter Greenfield had 10 points and two assists for Roland-Story. Colby Gray added six points, five rebounds and three assists and Dylan Matheason six points and two assists.

Grand View Christian improved to 11-1. Harouna Sissoko had 15 points, six rebounds and four steals and Arturo Montes 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Thunder.

GOWRIE — Roland-Story used strong 3-point shooting and rebounding to dispose of Southeast Valley, 54-34, Jan. 7 at Gowrie.

The Norsemen hit 11 3-pointers and posted a 38-26 rebounding advantage. They also held the Jaguars to 30-percent shooting from the field.

Roland-Story limited Southeast Valley to three points in the second quarter. The helped the Norsemen build a 25-12 lead at the half, and they maintained a comfortable edge throughout the second half.

Sam Skaar hit four 3-pointers and totaled 14 points and six rebounds and Dylan Ihle, Carter Greenfield and Colby Gray all scored six points as part of a balanced Roland-Story attack. Gray also had seven rebounds and two blocks.

Dylan Matheason, Ben Chelsvig and Zach Twedt each chipped in five points for Roland-Story. Matheason also had eight rebounds and three steals, Chelsvig two steals and Twedt two assists.

Aaron Graves did most of the damage for Southeast Valley, finishing with 21 points.
